Oh, and another thing about O-1 pay...You won't even be getting O-1 pay before no fewer than five organizations will make raids on your paycheck for charitable contributions... Once you get to A-pool, the pay attrition will continue.

Thats only if you give in and contribute to them...

Thanks, a lot of that info is helpful. I am single, in BDCP (which E-3 pay currently makes life very easy), and won't have extensive student loans (10k). I guess I was wondering if the new car I would be driving would be a 95' model Mazda with 100 k miles on it or a new 07' Vette...Granted both would probably do fine with the ladies...Different strokes for different folks as they say. I didn't know what a typical ensign pilot trainee was driving around, now I've got a better idea, thanks (pennst8's advise was especially helpful, lol)

I'm driving an 04 Altima, bought slightly used... nice car and all. Married, living comfortable. Not in the lap of luxury, but the wife and I pay our bills, do most of the stuff we want and still have money in the bank. Tis a good life....

You'll be fine as long as you don't go overboard with the spending. I've never been in a position where I couldn't meet my financial obligations. Close at times, but always met them.

..... and drove this from SEA to P-Cola.

I don’t have any student loans, but I am married with two kids and one on the way. I have a mortgage, two car payments, and day care.

The Navy (and the Military for that matter) has come a long way in helping its service members obtain their degrees. 100% TA is a CAN’T MISS opportunity for active duty. It might take a little longer, and be a bit unconventional at times, but it is very doable. O1E pay is a very nice reward for those enlisted sailors who earn their degrees and choose to join the officer community.

The raise might not be a lot to begin with, but the retirement for an officer is far better then that of a Chief.

Is this posted somewhere, I was always under the impression that Officers didn’t get BAS and that it was an enlisted subsidy .......
You gotta' be kidding ... have you ever looked at an Officer's pay chart ???

Basic Allowance for Subsistence (BAS)
BAS is meant to offset costs for a member's meals. This allowance is based in the historic origins of the military in which the military provided room and board (or rations) as part of a member's pay. This allowance is not intended to offset the costs of meals for family members.
Beginning on January 1 2002, all enlisted members get full BAS, but pay for their meals (including those provided by the government). This is the culmination of the BAS Reform transition period.
Because BAS is intended to provide meals for the service member, its level is linked to the price of food. Therefore, each year it is adjusted based upon the increase of the price of food as measured by the USDA food cost index. This is why the increase to BAS will not necessarily be the same percentage as that applied to the increase in the pay table, as annual pay raises are linked to the increase of private sector wages.
2006 BAS Rates
Officers
$187.49/month
Enlisted Members
$272.26/month

I've looked, but only at base pay and BAH. I think I was told years and years ago that officers didn't BAS, so I never thought to either look or ask if they did.

Well I guess you learn something new every day.

I always wondered why officers BAS was less than enlisted.
'Cause Officers eat at McDonald's more often .... far cheaper. And so are Officers .... :)

As an enlisted sailor, I can speak to this. When station on board a ship or at an extended training command (i.e. "A" school and Boot camp), enlisted sailors do not receive their BAS, the command (or Galley) does. Officers must pay a mess bill if they chose to eat at the Wardroom on board ships. The difference is the option officers have over enlisted sailors. Though enlisted sailors don't HAVE to eat at in the Galley, food must be provided for them.

Then again, it's because of this, I though officers didn't receive BAS....

I'm convinced this is the anti-truth. I was always really disturbed to see how much Macdonalds the younger E's were eating. The Macdonalds at K-Bay closed for a month or so while I was there. I was worried people would starve. Smiles in effect for all.

This is what I had noticed when I was stationed at Whidbey. I always saw the officers hitting up Subway as a rule.
