Kind of what I was hinting at, these days you usually have a US MPRA for a big transit, not always but usually. That kind of reduces the advantage of the Romeo for those transits given the Sierra's superior SUW punch.

Agree that non-US MPRA tend to be useless, just about anywhere in the world.
60S has a superior SUW punch? Am we just talking about the M197 or is there something else I'm missing?

Are R's carrying 8 Hellfires these days? (serious) Able to put .50 cal on both sides? (sarcastic)

Not sure, that's why I asked. I remember LHEP and RHEP was supposed to give 60R 8 hellfire capability. And we had tested APKWS on 60R but not sure if that was fielded. I don't recall the 60R CSW config but is a .50cal on both sides really enough of an "SUW punch" to give up all the other stuff the 60R brings? I just remember how many holes my AWs put in the jet skis after firing thousands of rounds...

Obviously the Romeo deployers will have the deets, but big picture... Yes, LHEP and RHEP is a thing now, as is APKWS (for whatever that's worth). I'm not sure how practical it would be to put 8 missiles on there, not to mention limiting your GAU firing arc.

For the Romeo guys, I'm too lazy to look... Is there a restriction with putting 4 Hellfires on a -299 and landing in the trap? I can't remember if that was a carry over issue from the Bravo or if I'm remembering wrong.

With Hellfire is the AGM-119 formally a thing of the past? Not keeping up on helo missles.

Ah gotcha. I get where you're coming from now.

I still feel like I'd prefer to just get "proper" land based support for strategic chokepoints like the BAM or SOH though as a general rule...just because the transit is a snapshot in the deployed timeframe of a ship. You don't want to come out the other end and regret not having multipurpose capability when you get through and find you really need it when you're on station to operate for months. Ideally. Obviously can't always get what you want.

And if there's an amphib anywhere in the mix, throw up AH-1Zs if you really need small craft killing firepower.
I'm guessing you know UNCLOS allows helicopters to fly during strait transits because they're considered the "normal operating mode" of the ship or some such language. Land-based assets don't have the freedom of curly-cueing around for hours, and how often is an LHx helping the DDG escort M/Vs through straits?

Romeos have to do because we're there and considered part of the ship.
