As a guy who's taken TKD for 3 years, I'll just say that TKD should never be used alone unless you're a master.
Why? B/c unless you seriously have enough power to knock a guy out with one kick, a close in type could just rush in and waste you.

As a result, I've adopted a new technique called "dirty fighting." It involves picking up light yet hard objects and shots designed to break bones.

And from what I hear of Marine LINE training or whatever the hell it's called, that's pretty much what they teach.

hehe :) this wound up being a fun topic!

ok really, i never said i liked taekwondo. i barely use it. its a good foundation for maneuvering, but i really dont like it. i do know how to fight and i will win whatever scrabble i get myself in. i dont intend to go shoot my mouth off in an attempt at getting in a fight. i only shoot my mouth off when im right :) also, i am NOW well aware that there is NO self defense training at OCS :)

oh! and capoera is a SWEET martial art. i ahve seen videos of thsoe guys and all i can say is WOW. if any of you can catch it on espn, i highly recommend it!

Yeah, light and hard objects work well, too. My favorite is the head-butt featuring my head. Why you ask? Because it's perfect...full of air, yet hard as a rock =)

Louis Gosset Jr. is a badass. He was in that movie, "Iron Eagle"(well actually all of them) where that kid who just graduated high school gets to steal and fly and F-16, and then go save his dad from those bad guys. But without Louis Gosset Jr.'s expert wisdomn, the mission never would have gotten accomplished. Oh not to mention all those kids running around the base and stealing all that top secret info from their dads. Wow, if that is what its like to be in the Air Force....why did I choose the Navy???

Muhahahaha

If you join the good ol' USMC there will be plenty of martal arts training. They had various masters from lots of disiplines get to gether and told them "This is what we need our people to be able to do" and let the masters all work out a program- specific to USMC needs. It takes into consideration the fact that most combatents wear helmit and flacts- and all that.

Yup- I have a grey belt too- and was amoung some of the very first to get off the Island with a tan belt several years ago. While I remeber TONS of non-lethal tactics- like all that armed bar escort stuff and how to protect your rifle when some idiot civilian thinks its a good idea to try to get it from you, and breaking face could be bad PR- I think its got just as much focusing on that old 1-2-3 of stuning blow, take down blow- and then killing blow. Errrrrr.
