Ruger Announces Black Rifle

^No, you're completely right. I was just trying to illustrate your point that it really is personal preference a bit. Didn't mean to come across any other way. If anything, the fact that, with the innumerable optics/accessories/random stuff available for mounting on that rail space, the standard carry handle assembly is still available speaks to the personal preference piece.

Interesting question.

Is there any real application for a carry handle? I don't think that I have ever seen someone actually carry a black rifle by it's carry handle. Isn't that what the sling is for?

As you might expect with the Marine Corps, ditty boppin around the AO carrying your weapon by it's carrying handle when every M16 made still had a carrying handle, was a sure way to get your ass chewed by the Gunny.

Even if Gunny didn't care I don't think anyone would have carried it that way. It's too hard to control and slow getting it in action from there. Mostly I saw it carried by gripping it just in front of the mag well. I haven't thought about this until now but the only people I ever saw use a sling to carry weapon on patrol were M60 gunners. Times change thank god.

Nice to hear that its a piston...

All of my ARs are direct impingement, but I had an HK SL8-1 several years ago and loved how easy it was to keep clean.

It's nice to see that these short stroke pistons are becoming more and more popular... even if they are more expensive.

$2 bills for a 'new' AR piston gun ... ???

But this one is built by the Ruger Iron Works (w/ apologies to Grumman Iron Works) ...???

Put me down for one. I'd rather pony up another $5 hundred for one of these than spend $1500 for another AR (albeit a high quality Daniel Defense product) ....

Very cool. It's a great looking weapon.

Work that sucker out and let us know how Ruger's piston system holds out. There is some stiff competition out there selling "mature" (such as it is) piston systems. HK, LWRC, POF and others have been there done that and learned some painful lessons in the process. Hopefully Ruger has been paying attention and have learned from those that went before.

It's really interesting that an "old line" conservative company such as Ruger would jump right into the bleeding edge of AR technology with a piston, especially their first time out. Not only that but there are still a small but vocal group of simi-auto centerfire rifle fans out there that have heartburn over Rugers long time refusal to sell hicap mags to anyone but the police and military. I'm a Ruger fan and have owned 2 Mini-14's and a couple of pistols but it does tick me off a bit that it cost me 3X what it should to buy hicap mags for my Mini.

Looks like Rugers new management believes if you go, you go hard. It's obviously not a Bill Ruger run conservative company any more and I'm sure pulling for them.
