So at the NRA convention yesterday, Ruger (you know, Mini-14, 10/22, etc..) announced the release of their Black Rifle - the SR-556

Gas piston, short stroke op-rod based AR.. interesting!

What do all of these new black rifles have against the carry handle?

With that said
I own a ruger, love the crap out of it. If I see this rifle at the local gun shop, it'll be impossible to walk out without it.

Thanks to the OP for the heads up on this one.

Interesting question.

Is there any real application for a carry handle? I don't think that I have ever seen someone actually carry a black rifle by it's carry handle. Isn't that what the sling is for?

I am not trying to pick a fight, I just don't see the use in it. Neither do these guys:

Personally, I don't/wouldn't use it as it's name implies

I just always thought that these M-16/4/AR rifles all look naked without it.

The MSRP on that thing is around 2G's. Sure, it's a piston AR, made by Ruger (I'm a fan of a lot of their stuff), but $2000? I'm not saying that I wouldn't pick one up if a good deal presented itself, but it's a bit steep.

I perused Ruger's site yesterday while on duty, and though I didn't see any mention of it, I wonder if there's going to be an initial limited distribution to retailers in 'good standing' with the company? If so, I'm pretty sure that I won't see one around here for...well, ever.

To allow for optic use without removing the carrying handle or mounting awkwardly to the handle.

Nice choice of accessories, and I'm glad they're in the black rifle market but I probably wouldn't get one. Are pistons the new wonder-9 bandwagon? And hasn't Ruger had a spate of problems with the LCP and SR9?

You can get a brand new Sig 556 with their SigTAC red dot included for $1650.

$2000 is just to damn much for a base AR, piston or no.

Personally,
I like mounting an optic to a carry handle,

however, I do understand the need for some people to mount it directly to the rails for a more natural feel.

It really is a personal preference thing for me as far as the carry handle thing is concerned.

Personally, I think the carrying handle severely limits your options as far as mounting, co-witnessing sights, etc are concerned. Never have been much of a fan of the thing, and I'm glad that my work and personal boomsticks do not have them.

good point

and furthermore it points out that it is, infact, a personal thing.

not meant to be offensive to those that perfer it without of course.

Not to mention that it probably cuts down on price for those that do not need/want/would like to have the sight rail.

I guess when you really get down to it, it really is just a personal preference kind of thing.

thanks everyone for your feedback and know that I did not intend an argument, just some really constructive feedback.... which i got.
thanks again.
