Repercussions of a DOR?

ok my recruiter just told me that if you DOR too early from OCS you get an R-4 discharge?? Which he said means that you can't ever hold ANY gov't job (meaning postal service, FBI whatever) and then if you get married the charge carries over to your immediate family????

WTF?!?!

I'm throwing the bullshit flag on the dependants comment. Even so, here is an important question for you: Why are you even considering a DOR before you get there? Walking into any program with a defeated attitude is only setting yourself up for failure. If you decide the military is not for you, finish the program and decline your commission. As many here will tell you, it will get you out of there faster. Though I will add, don't take a potential seat away from someone if your not sure you want it.

Isn't it only used for RE-ENLISTEMENT purposes only? Would DORing too early effect ANY future employment?

Tried to tell him that. He said to finish the first 4 or 5 weeks and then decide. I'll get a better RE code? Im pretty sure(98 %) that this is not what I want. I've read those posts about people staying there forever! Ok not forever but at least longer than it would have taken them to graduate. How does that happen?

Any prospective employer (and certainly the Navy or another branch) can ask to see your DD-214, and that could raise questions about your fitness for employment, depending on what's on the 214.

Yes, the RE code is supposed to be used for re-enlistment information purposes, but that's not to say that it only ever gets looked at by a military recruiter.

Although it is pretty much universally advised to stay single during flight school, take it with a grain of salt. It reminds me of back in high school when everyone preached abstinence as the only logical method of birth control. Let's be realistic: People are going to screw, and people are going to enter into relationships with women (in the case of an SNA, probably a mindblowingly attractive woman that happens to be very good in bed). ;)

I think it's all about compartmentalization. You have to be good at it. You have to keep other areas of your life separated or divided in a manner that prevents them from negatively impacting eachother should problems arise. If you are the type of person that can't help but bring the baggage of your home/social life to work with you, you are playing with fire by dating in flight school.

I just got out of a 3 year uber-serious relaitonship (started before OCS and I'm just finishing up strike training). Although it was very taxing, I was able to leave it at home and focus and study on my flights. I think that flight training naturally builds that skill into folks. Although I've only been in naval aviation for a couple years, it has really taught me to isolate from the distractions and focus on the task at hand. I'd probably say looking down at the boat during CQ for the first time was one of those 'pucker factor' moments that taxed my ability to compartmentalize and focus the most. The biggest thing you can do for yourself is to get the hell out if the relationship is draining more from you than it is contributing (if it's toxic).

I doubt there would be many situations where a newly minted Ensign would have a recruit seaman or airman fresh out of Great Lakes directly under them nor have to yell at them (maybe in SWOdom), but not in aviation community as it would take almost two years to even get to a fleet squadron for an aviator and even then, there are LPOs and CPOs in the Chain of Command so that Ensigns don't get into trouble.

You're absolutely right. I was being dramatic, for effect. Officers don't yell at enlisted. But if you F up big time (DUI etc) you can expect an ass-chewing, possibly by your Div-O (?) I'm not a divo so I don't know... But yes, you could certainly be working for a former classmate.

I work in the civilian world, now. I'd think twice about a guy that DOR'd out of OCS. Props for giving it a shot, I guess. But, it proves that you aren't able to hang when the going gets tough. Sure, OCS sucks. Sure, they yell at you. Sure, they hurt your feelings. Big deal. Fall in line, suck it up, and figure out a way to get through it. That's the kind of guy I'm looking for to work here.

I know that you were talking about future Gov't employment, but you said 'ANY future employment.'

I beg to differ. :) One time while we were unloading the COD on deck, a yellow shirt came into the plane bitching about something or other. I was preoccupied (pissed off) trying to get a Tomcat engine out of the plane and get the plane reloaded for the next launch in about 20 minutes. Long story short, I told him to get the phuck out of my plane we had work to do. It turned out he was the Flight Deck Officer. That didn't work out for me so well.
 
DOR from OCS isnt a game ender for the military. I took the hard route, DOR'd from Navy OCS and picked up a Air Contract with the USMC 6 months later. Dont DOR though. I am the only one in the group I still keep in contact with that was able to get back in as an officer.
 
I actually DOR'ed from OCS last May after failing my depth perception test by 1 or 2 lines each time. Thought it would be an NPQ but it wasn't because I still had the option of NFO. Doctor considered the condition "permanent," but I was determined to be a pilot. Went home, wore contacts to correct for slight astigmatism, depth perception problem fixed. Hopefully the DOR isn't a game-ender as I am in the process of re-applying and trying to prove to the Navy I am 100% physically qualified for an SNA slot, again...
 
What is the average wait time to go home from a DoR and is there any possible way I can speed it up? I was told 3 weeks. Anyone have the experience?
