RANT - Logins (not as dorky as you may think)

SHARP was upgraded to 5.1 over the weekend, and looks to be a mild improvement over 5.0. But what I cannot abide is the fact that it now requires a "strong" password with comparison checks for the last 4 passwords. That adds on to the pile of passwords and logins that I've got to keep track of, to include:

NMCI
ACOL
NKO
GTCC
NALCOMIS

All with different complexity, aging and similarity requirements for their passwords - not to mention that there are now 6 completely different logins. To save time lost trying to remember or reset passwords, I now have a 3x5 card with all of the login/passwords on there (save ACOL - that one is memorized), which pretty much defeats the purpose of having logins and passwords, but damn. I only have so much room for truly random information, especially information that changes every 90 days.

Why don't these programs use the CAC card for authentication? If the developers of SHARP were going to change the password requirements, why not just change it to CAC authentication? (NATEC does actually do this for e-pubs... but then requires yet ANOTHER login and password.)

Any thoughts?

Unless you have a CAC reader for home/deployed use, it's easier to just have it on the web and not require it. We've got guys at various places right now that still update their sharp (from home, hotel, etc.). I hear you though about the password changes. I have my written down in one spot as well.

Because the chinese want a piece of your info network. I have 80 passwords too. Let's suffer as a team.

$30, and that's for small quantities. Why NMCI doesn't buy 1000s of these and give them to whoever asks is beyond me. You'd have to self-support, I imagine, but hell, I'm doing that now anyway. (Half of the printers upstairs are inop. NMCI "has a ticket in on it.")

When I read the title to this thread I thought it was going to be a rant about Kenny Loggins. Not logins. This is alot less dorky though.

"They" say this is what you're supposed to do anyway. I think "they" are a pain in the ass.

Im only a MIDN, but what is the possibilty of using fingerprint or retina scanners in the future? I know that many of the business laptops on sale now have them in basic configurations, besides not wanting to spend more money what other reason could their be against something like this?

I'd say the biggest reason is because they can't seem to keep a simple card reader operational and trying to keep a finger reader operational, w/ everyone wiping their finger full of goop on it would be worse.

I think the billions have already been spent on this stuff. No more $ for extra crap such as cac readers, biometrics, or otherwise.
That teet is sucked dry.
Oct 6, 2000DoN awards NMCI contract to EDS. Contract is valued at $6.9 billion ($4.1 billion for the five-year base period plus one additional three-year option for a total value of $6.9 billion).

Upgraded to Sharp 5.1 last week, and I tried to log on last night and I've already forgotten my password. At least it's not as bad as NKO and Bupers, which I always have to reset every time I go there.

I finally broke down and wrote that stuff on a sticky on my computer at home. I hope the cleaning lady isn't looking at my OSR and doing NKO lessons when I'm not here. :D I have one of those password Apps on my PDA where you can protect a whole bunch of passwords with a singe password, but I've never really used it.

yeah...i'm not very good of keeping track of things like stickies, day planners, and little memorandum flip books. i have about 5 or 6 of them floating around this island somewhere with all of my to-do lists in them. i've just started sending emails to myself at work with stuff to do for that day.

I was a big fan of the PDA for that reason and I found it indispensable on my last tour. For things like multiple categorized to do lists and keeping track of contact information for all the millions of people you tend to deal with, I found it hard to beat. I haven't used it here for school at all (not all that busy), but I'll probably pick up a new one once I head back to a squadron. These days you can use them for word/excel documents and what not.
