All,

Just got my app for the Florida CCW in the mail today. Big problem though: I need to qualify for the "competency w/ a firearm" section. Anyone have any ideas on the best way to do this in the Pcola area? It says military training is also acceptable, but I don't have my pistol ribbon....would like to have it. Not really sure where to track down a course to meet that requirement of the permit.

See if you can get your pistol qual. I am in JAX, and I used it.

However, it is kinda a good idea to go to a class, not for the firearms, but the discussion and explanation of the local CCW laws.

I was lucky, an AWC at my command taught the class, and went over the legalities with me while we were stuck on FCF one day.

Chunks, Gatordev, got any local range contacts?

The guys down at Jay's II Gun Shop always took pretty good care of me and could probably tell you where the nearest class is. I second taking the civilian class...its a very good intro on the ins and outs of defending yourself with a concealed weapon. Worth the money.

Jay's is down on Garden Ave BTW...just after the bridge as you are going towards downtown.

You actually don't need proof of the pistol qual. My friend just sent in a copy of his military ID with the Florida application and it was enough for him. I'll double check with him tomorrow and let you know. Good luck.

I got my Florida permit when I was a working stiff on a submarine out of Kings' Bay GA...it worked out better at the time for me since it was good in both states and more transferrable.

Long story short...can't help you with a location in the P-Cola area...there are some good folks over there though...they'll take care of ya.

I'll attest to the ability to get one w/ just the military ID.

Not to fond of Jay's though. Had my P-22 repaired there and their pistol-smith pricing was way to high, and the work was shoddy.

submit your application now, with your ID. It'll take 3 months to get the permit. Plenty of time to get that class in.

You have to go to the actual Santa Rosa County Sherrif's Office. That's not the little satellite office in Pace, but the main one that's located at the SR County Jail. If you do the electronic fingerprint submission, though, it's going to run you $40 extra. Supposedly, it can knock up to half of the processing time off your CCW, but it still took just a bit over 2 months for mine to make it through the system and back to me.

If you're not familiar with CCW laws, use of deadly force, etc., take the class, even though you really only need a copy of your military ID. Better to be an informed armed citizen than an uninformed one, as there can be quite a few nuances involved, even though FL is pretty good about CCW matters.

I'll second staying away from Jay's II in P'cola and Jay's Guns in Crestview, unless you absolutely need to find some random piece of gear immediately. If you're looking for a guy who'll work with you on pricing for a gun, check out Al's Pawn & Gun on Hwy. 90 in Pace. It's kind of ghetto, but they'll be willing to give you a fair price on most things. There's also another really great place in between Milton and Crestview off 90. I can't remember the name, but it's run by a crazy former Marine who will deal. Last I heard, they were on vacation in 'Asia' until this month, but they might be open again.

No kidding...not doubting the experience you had or really trying to defend them or anything...but why do you say this?

I was only there for a little while but got two very reasonable deals from them...

It was mainly the attitude I got from a couple of the employees while interacting with them in the store and at a couple gun shows. I had cash and my CCW in-hand, and I was looking to spend it. They didn't seem to want to be bothered by my questions, though, so I stopped bothering them and bought my XD and .38 from someone else. I saved a nice bit of cash, too.

Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that Jay's and its employees suck at life in general, nor am I saying that I've never spent money there. Just that, personally, one or two of the workers turned me off of the store as a whole, whereas many other stores I've been to and purchased from were not like that.

Thanks....like I said...your experience could be the norm and mine could have been the oddball...I was just curious what happened.
