if you are going to go on that stretch, why not go all out. how about the Navy just Buy Homestead AFB. It has a long runway which is good for planes to land on, there is everglades which tons of SNA's could bailout into and the sundowners in KeyWest for the T-6B SUPERtexan to go get a fox 2 and then party on duvall. You know just for discussion....

The only thing that would be as big of a monetary cluster fuck moving primary to MIRAMAR (and you putting all the angry marines somewhere else)(oh and the few JG's), would be a primary stud trying to talk to LA center.

Sigh. . .

And coming in 2018: no more Navy squadrons in Hawaii. . . it is to weep. . .

I heard that the Navy was doing a study about only basing the P-8 in Whidbey and Jax. Is it official that they are going to be moving out of Kaneohe for good?

If the commodore's brief is to be believed: the plan has been vetted through the JCS and blessed by the Hawaii senators. The Wing will close circa FY2015 and shortly thereafter the squadrons will do the homeport shuffle to Whidbey as they roll back from deployment and transition to P-8.

Runway expansion costs, hangar construction costs, and the fact that the landlord (USMC) wants his real estate back for his own squadrons all combined to make continuation untenable.

HSL-37 might get to stay. . .but it seems the Ospreys will need the hangar space, so I wouldn't hold my breath on that one.

Plan is to det "something like" 1-2 planes and 1-2 crews to KBay from Whidbey on a permanent, rotating basis for ASW training support and national tasking.

For the last month, I have been praying for Ivan to park an Akula off Waikiki or resume Bear patrols to Barking Sands, in the hope that we can end this madness. . .

Have you ever heard of an Environmental Impact Report?
Nevermind all of the other reasons it would be dumber than a box of hammers to move all of the training... the EI Survey and ensuing report will take years and cost millions of lives.

P-8s and 2-3 more expeditionary Growler squadrons. It's about to get crowded up here on the Rock.

Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if someone said, "Why do we need 6 squadrons in Whidbey? Let's just make the 3 squadrons there a little bigger, shift to a detachment mentality, and save a metric assload of money."

And that person would actually be the smartest person in the whole MPRA community.

Not to mention: NASA never flies again, the Russians beat us to Mars, and we all live under the boot heel of Socialism. Wait…forget that last part.

I know that it, like Barbers Point, was "re-aligned as MCAS", but Naval Air Station Miramar deserves at least a shout-out for historical purposes...

Pretty sure that is where God himself intended fighters (or strike fighters) to be flown. I can't think of a place in existence that is more conducive to both training as well as having QOL. Fallon with a beach.
