I am planning a trip to NAS atlanta to see some friends before i go to OCS. Is there anything i should buy at base clothing or wal-mart or (other?) before i head to OCS?

I know i need a set of the ribbons/medals i rate...but how many sets of each?

My intent is to buy this stuff now and take down there to save time, hassle, and hopefully money!

Thanks in advance

Bryan

One set of medals/ribbons should suffice. Also, you'll need your mini-medals. I would buy a good pair of running shoes, try to find out if your feet are low, normal, or high arched. Being a marine, you probably already know that. Otherwise, buy some good white undershirts where the neck won't stretch, tighty whities, and crew socks. Also, buy some of those teal PT shorts, they only give you one during INDOC week, and when you think about it, it's pretty gross that you wear one pair of shorts. Buy body wash, it's way easier to use that instead of soap, plus you don't have to worry about dropping it. That's all I can think of now, because you'll get most of your geared issued on wednesday of indoc week.

To piggyback on what patmack18 said, I only brought a gym bag with the essentials and the civvies on my back. When we were candio's, people were showing up with luggage you would bring to an airport. Not a good idea. One guy showed up with his stuff in a plastic bag, so we gave him crap for it when he said that was the "only suitcase he could find." However, after he went inside, we pretty much thought that he was the smartest one. Remember, less is more.

Thanks guys...just wanted to make sure. When i went to boot camp in 98 they said to only bring the civvies on your back and at most 20 dollars. People showed up with porn, condoms, knives, etc, etc and got their butts chewed out by the DIs. I don't remember spending more than 5 dollars in cash (sunday newspaper for a couple weeks)...the rest was a debit card they issued us.

Also, do you recommend bringing your POV or just relying on gov't transportation? I am sure if/when we get liberty there will be plenty of guys with POVs.

Any other recommendations besides show up knowing the big 4, be in reasonably good shape, and don't piss off the DIs?

Looks like you got the gist. Yeah, POV it...not only because of liberty, but when 4th and 9th week RLP rolls around, you'll want that space to stash all your extra crap. Plus, if you have the POV, you call the shots...want to go to wal-mart to buy a ton of candy? Good to go. Oh yeah, if you want to bring the heat, have porn mailed to you.

You'll spend more than you did at boot camp, so bring the cash, because what happens a lot is that when an NEX run is made for RLP supplies, you're an unsecured class, and the candio isn't taking everyone. More likely it'll be one guy from each room (or less) and you'll be giving someone else a list and the money to cover it. That's where the cash really comes in handy. I think I brought 300 bucks.

I haven't seen any teal ones, I'm guessing the Navy Blue ones that I've been running in from the NEX won't suffice; or will they? That's what they're wearing in the spiral I got.

They may not be teal, but they're definitely not Navy blue. They're kinda short, short enough that a straight guy wouldn't choose to wear them.

JayManC,

Go to www.spencershih.com/OCS.html

In the first and second picture, those are the shorts I'm talking about. Looking at them now, they seem darker than I remember, so maybe they changed the color. If those are the shorts you've seen, then go ahead and buy some extras.

Yes...Indoc week may possibly be the most fun you can have with your clothes on. (not my pics, I ripped them from another thread and added captions.)

doubledown: "what are the ribbons and metals needed for OCS?"

Any that you have earned while you were in the military (for past e's). I believe that you will get the katsup/mustard a.k.a. geedunk (national defense medal) when you get there.

Where are those pictures from? It looks like a squad bay to me, but I thought OCS had dorm rooms.
