That's an awfully big TV. I've decided to buy the Samsung LNT-5265F. 52" LCD, 1080P, great reviews, amazing picture, ~$3000. Anybody hear different? Pulling the trigger in about a week.

Brett,

I don't know if you are dead set on screen size but if you would be OK going with a 42" LCD, take a look at the one I bought. It is a TOSHIBA 42" REGZA LCD HDTV (42HL167) full HD 1080P and it goes for about $1800 at circuit city. I lucked out and got a great deal on ebay for $1200 with an HDMI cable. I read the reviews on it before pulling the trigger and they were all great and so far I can't disagree. Anyway, it's something for you to consider.

Thanks, I waivered between the 46 and 52 inch models for this set - settled on the larger based on my room size. Either way, it's gong to rule. Already upgraded to HD DTV at my new location, so it will be ready to enjoy. It's going to be a great football season. :D

One more time for me .... keep it really simple .... @ 48"-50" screen ..... the question:

LCD or Plasma ???

A4s,

The big decision maker for me was can I live w/ a Plasma? Slightly hotter, more concern w/ burn-in (but certainly MUCH better than when they first came on the scene) and most importantly, ease of moving. The last one may not be a big deal for you, but I know I still have at least a couple more moves, and having to deal w/ the much more fragile Plasma just wasn't worth agonizing over the rest of the feature wars between the two types.

In the end, I went w/ LCD.

Couple months ago, did my homework, colored by the Sharp 37" CRT TV that I bought 1988, still looks/operates like new, I decided on the Sharp Aquos 52D62U which is LCD. I long favored Plasma as I always thought LCD has tint/saturation problems. But after reading all the reviews about the SOA manuf facility that Sharp has; looking at the detailed specs, that is what I went with. Big mistake, it has tint/saturation problems. But it IS a personal preference thing, neighboors, friends, relatives that view the Sharp in my family room can see no problems, or they dare not say so. Without exception they all love it and are "sold" on the Sharp. Still an unhappy camper, trying to decide what to do.

To further complicate; I am not impressed with 1080 progressive scan HighDef. I think marginal difference. Tried to talk diver friend not to spend his $$$ on HD underwater camera equipment, he did, happy as a lark. My former boss said I could complicate a glass of water:eek: I guess I just did:eek:

P.S: Size? IMHO, it cannot be too large, that is the bigger the better, even in smaller rooms, as long as it will fit in the physical confines of the room.

I don't totally agree, Chief. Some of it depends on what you watch. The bigger the HD TV, the more you see the standard def crap when watching SD. If you're room (and therefore viewing distance, which is what really matters) is small enough that you have to move your eyes/head to see the whole screen, then the SD crappiness isn't worth it, to me anyways.

I'll just throw this out there: As far as ease of moving for plasmas, we take them to the field when we set up a full-on DASC. Granted, we have specialized cases to keep them relatively safe in the back of a 7-ton, but there have been 0 issues in the last few years that the MASS units have been using them.

The only thing I can caution you on is make sure your TV is the right size for the room you are putting it in. I wanted a really huge TV and "settled" for a 42" LCD... Good thing, because any bigger and it would hurt your eyes based on the distance of the couch from the TV.

As far as LCD vs. Plasma, I thought the LCD looked better, but both are fine. I ended up chosing LCD because the one I found was on sale and came with built-in DVR.

Yeah...plus, there's only so much detail you want to see when watching porn.

If I had the money, I wouldn't waste another minute thinking about the 63" TV because I saw that thing on display at costco and all I can say is, it's quite a sight. I have the room for it but I guess it will have to wait for that big 1st Lt paycheck. Hopefully, there will be more info about this TV on the net and more reviews by then. I would really like to know how phillips managed to get the price down to $3,000...considering anything of comprable size is $7,000+. It is a nice looking TV though and I know it would look pretty sweet up on the wall.

when you wreck your first $4000 plasma from a image burn.. you will wish you had an LCD.... but when the pixel burns out in the middle of your LCD... you will wish you had a plasma....in the end.. save the hassle of a 48" screen and go pick up a nice DLP projector with a say 100" screen (in a 15' room), much easier to move, and lately cheaper cost as long as you aren't looking at a 1080p, which is overpriced and under-supported for now

And have to close my blinds all the way everytime I want to watch TV? No thanks. I do hear that DLP TVs w/ LEDs are supposed to be very nice, but they're just arriving, so I'm sure a bit more expensive. Also very thin.

You obviously haven't met the "Hawaiian Moving/Shipping/Wrecking Company" that moved me. I will give them this: They made everything fit in the containers. How they did that is irrelevant...at least to them.
