My buddy is a Recon dude who got his PhD while he was ROTC staff at a really good school. Granted, he had done some masters work while he was an undergrad. Also, he didn't use it in the next couple billets and didn't really let the word out that he'd gotten it. However, he's got a really bling-bling job now in DC, and I"m sure the PhD/Recon thing didn't hurt his application.

What about this idea: My kids are of an age that I would like to get my sea tours out of the way sooner rather than later. I thought about doing my initial sea tour overseas (hopefully joint as well) in the Pacific and then do my next tour as a sea tour overseas but in the Atlantic if possible. Then, I would come back to the east coast area and do my D.C. tour, my Masters degree, etc. in whatever order was the best for family and career.

By the way, I'm a future Intel guy who arrives with a smile to OCS next month.

That's my master plan which will change completely as early as day 1. :)

Is there anything good or bad about this master plan? Would my back to back overseas sea tours somehow hurt me along the lines that FlyinSpy is talking about?

Section 8.A says active duty Officers in any designator. Obviously if your designator is not eligible for a warfare designation, that requirement is moot.

Anyway, it'll only take you 15-20 years to make grade to qualify. Things might just change in the interim. This is part of that cart/horse precedence I was talking about.

However 1630's who earned their warfare qual in another designation would be eligible.

Thanks for the clarification Brett. I have to disagree though about the cart before the horse though. As I said above in my initial post, getting a Phd has been a life-long dream of mine and so it makes sense for me to check things out even when I'm not even close to being eligible for this or that program. Just gathering data.:icon_smil

We hear ya, but Brett's point is that programs can and will change 5 times by the time you would be eligible. Those of us who have been around a couple years and those who have been around alot longer (Brett) have seen major changes in damn near every program that the Navy runs, it's just the way it is.

Back to back sea tours as a JO won't hurt you, and in fact portray you as a hard charger. Back to back sea tours as an O-4, where you could end up with "1 of 1" FITREPS, could conceivably hurt you relative to some of your peers. And by "hurt", don't read too much into it - if you did well, get an EP, and the language of the FITREP bullets is good, you'll be fine. How it could hurt you is if you are a borderline case for promotion, and the guys who are clustering around you are "2 of 9" - then all else equal the nod goes to the other guy.

But that's not exactly common either - promotion boards also like intel guys who go to sea. Excel at whatever you do, and the promotions will follow. (Up to a point - then you break out the kneepads...)

The names of programs typically do change often, and even some programs get combined with others to form a new one all together. However, the requirements for the programs (in whatever name they are going by) don't often change all that much.

I'm not advocating putting any kind of cart before any pony here. However, having a basic knowledge of the available programs out there for officers is a good thing in my opinion.

That's the basic approach I was taking. Although I both concede and appriciate the point Brett was making.

My level of knowledge about Navy programs is minimal, so any info about potential...one day...maybe...etc. programs are helpful for me while thinking about the future. And who knows, perhaps this thread helped other people who are currently eligible.

Don't know if you'd consider a PhD on the civilian side but there are some benfits to doing it that way, too. All the PhD students in the sciences that I know receive a stipend or fellowship that is enough to cover tuition and basic living expenses (I don't know about social sciences, I'm in biological oceanography and work mostly with physicists, chemists, and geologists from various schools). In fact, my department has a minimum funding that all supervisors must guarantee to grad students before they are accepted. It's certainly not as much as a Navy salary (especially if you don't go to grad school until you're an O-5) but it's enough to live on without taking out student loans. I don't know anything about Navy Postgrad School or where you can go to grad school but you also may have more flexibility as a civilian and whether or not you need that flexibility probably depends on what you plan to do with the degree and what you want to study. Anyway, just another option to keep in mind when grad school becomes a more immediate concern. Good luck at OCS.
