Jay's Guns in Pensacola... Good prices, and they treat you right. Plus, after buying one gun... you get 10% off all future purchases...

My wife and I are thinking of getting 1 or 2 handguns for personal protection (under the bed, in car for traveling, etc). Does anyone have any suggestions on what would be good to get and from where? We are currently in Pensacola. Also, does anyone know much about the concealed handgun courses/permits in Florida?
We appreciate the help. Thank you.

If you are serious than whatever you are comfortable with and can shoot / operate will be fine.

The investment needs to come in training. Get decent, professional training in defensive handgun.

My wife just took a class from them and said it was a good beginners introductory course. At the end of the class they brought out 15-20 different handguns for them to shoot, Glock 19, Kimber .45, S&W .38, etc. to allow those who weren't familiar to gain a small amount of experience and help the decision process if they were looking to buy. Completion of the course also means you are invited to monthly tactical courses they offer. Not a bad deal.

Agreed on Jay's and Academy's prices, although the guys at Jay's are good to work with you. They gave us a good deal on my 229, but we got a Glock 26 for less than $400... They couldn't beat that...

To the OP...

My gun of choice is HK. I carry a P2000 which is basically a USP but made specifically for CCW. HK has come out with some new weapons this past year which should be available soon. The only bad thing about HK is the price, but if you can get past that obsticle there great weapons. You might also want to look into Springfield XD and Sig.

Seriously, guys ... you keep going on and on about "price". All of you do it. We're talking about a potential life-saving tool, here ... you ain't gonna' remember the extra bucks in a month or two.

Believe it.

I'm a member out there... Great place to shoot, super nice people... and the classes are very nice. Annual membership is $75 for your family... and you can bring guests.

Im with you on that A4's. I just hear people say they don't like HK because of the price. I only own HK's so I'm obviously okay spending the extra money for something that will work every time I shoot it.

The way I like to look at it is with proper care a gun will last a lifetime, literally, so if you divide that $700-800 for a new H&K by the next 80 years, that's only about $10 a year. Pretty cheap in my opinion!

First let me say that buying a gun only out of concern for its price is stupid...as A4's et al. have pointed out. Do not buy a Keltec because the price is great. Buying cheap (and I'm not saying just inexpensive) guns is stupid.

That said, I think that some discussion of price is worthwhile. I wouldn't knock H&K reliability, but neither would I "not trust" a Glock because it happened to be 300$ cheaper. Further, if you are equally comfortable with a particular H&K model, and a Glock (as I am) then I don't see a problem choosing to carry the Glock because its cheaper.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding the point here.

No you're not -- I just wanted guys to look at the "whole package" instead of focusing in on the price first, second, and in some discussions I've read herein, third. It's like --- price is the first and final determinant for some fellows ....

I understand money. I understand not "having enough" money. But we waste money in sooooooooooooo many ways on a daily basis.

Pick what you want for the job you want to do with it. Then look at the price. If it's not the most expensive = GREAT!!! Too expensive?? Maybe ... so look at the second choice ... or get the "too expensive" one that REALLY does it for you and don't go to Starbuck's for a month or two. Sacrifice something somewhere else ..... there's lots of ways to "afford" another $100-200 for a handgun that you really want.

And you won't miss the money in a little while --- not with how most of us waste money all the time, day in, day out .... :)
