I would have to agree, I certainly didn't consider getting thumped on the chest a few times when I got soft winged to be hazing.
 
Have I been hazed? You bet your ass I have. I got the crap beat out of me when I got to my first squadron in 96, and I couldn't walk for nearly two days after I had my bloodstripe pinned on. Was it hazing? Yeah, probably.

Is what the majority of people who get charged with hazing do these days? Nope. At least, not from the legal reports that I read. I'm certain that shit goes on, without a doubt, but I neither condone nor ignore it. Because there's a very fine line between 'tradition' and 'bad habit'. And sometimes, Marines (and Sailors) need someone to make sure they don't go full retard.
 
Hazing or tradition ... ?? I say "tradition" ... but I wouldn't want to do it again from the Polywog side of the house ... :)


 
After CQ'n off the Kitty Hawk in VT-4, we got our soft wings in the North Island O'Club. Some of us got hit hard....our female pilot got knocked on her ass. We were all drunk and it was a great time. However, we were all Navy, no civies.

Yep. And that's why leadership and the guy's peers need to hammer his nuts flat, so that hopefully everyone doesn't have to pay. Tradition and hazing are two very different things, and it is sad every time we lose the former because people try to use it as an excuse to do the latter.

Note for Ensigns: If a rebuke from a fellow JO is a 9mm round, the CO's getting involved is a 500 pounder, and a Commodore/Flag O's edict is a freaking nuke. Jackasses need to be handled on the lowest level, because if the higher-ups get their hand forced, they WILL act so as not to get in hot water with THEIR bosses, even if that means killing the proverbial fly with a sledgehammer.
