looks like a disgruntled P-3 guy that didn't get jets to me!!!!

at least he got rid of that damn missile being launched from a (bleah) ship.

slowly he is learning.

by next month I expect a P-3 overland shot...as far from the 'real' navy as possible.

Not really ... did my time on the ship while I was young and single. Now I'd rather fly to Thailand than float there. You jets guys have fun though, P-3s were always my first choice.

Glad you liked it Fly Navy, and Zab, I'll work on an overland shot one of these days.

Whats wrong Zab, don't want to get beat down by a VQ guy again? (I keed, I keed). Actually, the thread you posted should answer the question.

An update on the replacement to the EP-3. The last I heard, they were sticking with the Army Aerial Common Sensor (ACS) program. The Embraer ERJ-145 (Embraer is a Brazilian company)was selected as the plane.

This is what the Swedish Gulfstream IV SIGINT bird looks like, the ACS should look similar.

So is the Army taking over the EP-3 mission?

NO. The Navy just joined with the Army to buy the airframe. The Army has its own SIGINT birds, RC-12's and RC-7's, and they needed a replacement for them. They are geared more towards tactical ground intel. The Navy is planning on buying 19 planes to replace the EP-3 fleet and will probably buy some different internal equipment (the Army plans to buy 38 aircraft). Multi service purchases of aircraft are becoming more common now, it saves money by spreading the cost around and is good politics. The JSF and the V-22 are 2 examples of multiservice purchases.

Interesting perspective.

The services apply money and manpower to the National Sigint Effort which is managed and directed by NSA, a DOD organization.

Given the 9/11 report that said interr alia, to pull NSA out of DOD and combine with CIA, what do you think longer range impact, esp in regard to tactical and DISUP sigint?

Size matters

The P-3 Community is larger with more squadrons than EP-3. If you're interested in a career in naval aviation, you should consider flying a platform in a numerically larger community. A larger community means more flying slots, more department head jobs, more squadrons to command.

P-3's and the new MultiMission Maritime Aircraft are in reality Maritime Reconnaisance and Attack aircraft; EP-3's are Recon only. Naval Aviation has a built-in preference for putting bombs on target. (Replace "bombs" with torpedoes, or cruise missiles.) Anyone recall what happened to the RA-5C Vigilante community? It was pure recon and was totally replaced by a pod on an F-14. Anyone recall what happened to VQ-5 and VQ-6 ES-3's? Faded away.

In the final analysis, do what you feel like doing or fly what you feel like flying. If you don't like what you're doing, every day starts out bad and a few go good. But if you like what you're doing, well, just the opposite is likely to occur.
