Other gouge / actual study books? input from those whov taken please

Hi,
I have to say thanks a lot for making this forum, you guys are doing a great job helping us on the way to our dreams of flying.
I have checked out the gouge on here and on navygouge.com, but I was wondering if anyone used some of the actual study guides you can buy on amazon etc.
I would appreciate if those of you who have taken it recently could chip in about what ways / tools were best for your studying.

If you look through the gouge on here, you'll find a link to a copy of the ARCO book that's online thanks to the Air Force. That'll save you a few dollars. As far as looking to study books beyond that, I'd say it's not really necessary. Between the gouge on here and the online copy of the ARCO book, you should be more than prepared.

that book is only good for key nautical terms (keel, bulkhead, etc, etc.) and explaining the difference in air speeds (IAS/TAS/CAS....etc)

not worth your money

For the record, the word "Gouge" applies to both the singular as well as the plural form of the word.:D

Don't get that book!!!!

Hi guys, I just wanted to quickly throw my 2 cents in there. And I can assure you all those study guides and books are not worth your while. What you need to do is (this is if you want to go overboard with preparing):

1) follow the instructions on this link:

2) read the Blue Jacket's Manual Handbook
3) review all your math skills, and ensure you work well under time pressure
4) use the online Acro book for the spatial apperception
(what I did is print them and cut them out, so they are out of order, and you don't automatically know the answer, and then study them until you are down to 10 secs to know the answer, and use the questions on the above link)
5) last but not least, do not cram in the last week.....be prepared weeks in advance....TRUST me that is the key!!!

I am telling you that will get you through the test. I almost promise....:-)
 
Edited: because....well, I just don't think I could live with myself if I left "gouges" up there
 
The gouges, sorry GOUGE;) included on this site is more than adequate to do well on the ASTB. I would strongly recommend not stressing out. Study the sample test, and go take it. I'm a rock and I did just fine.

As beneficial as that may be, it's not exactly fair. I could teach a monkey to to get a score they don't deserve :eek: That's one reason I actually wish the test would cycle and change the questions every now and then (months, not years is what I'm thinking).

Bah! If you're not cheating, you're not trying hard enough.
 
On the math part: read the question then look at the answers next, often the right answer is obvious without any computations. Then forget about it and repeat.
