I got a question about officers sabers. Do all officers get them or just some? Also, when are they issued? Thanks.

You must have one for your formal full mess dress...but usually the only time you'll have to use it is in a change-of-command or the like where you are leading a large group of as part of a formal honor guard (like a Navy wedding).

No, they are not issued and rather expensive. The officers that have them either purchased them, borrowed them, or had them awarded/given to them.

It's 0-4 and above that are required. However, you can get one whenever, usually as some sort of commissioning gift. Otherwise I wouldn't worry about one until I made LCDR.

Required for all officers in the USMC. And they're pricey - mine was $800... My parents bought it for my comissioning gift.

Yeah, the Corps' is quite a bit more than the Navy's...but they are bad a$$...

The Air Force has a similar tradition for their officers...cross pens. No mother-of-pearl though... ;)

So, is it mandatory for all Navy officers to have swords or not? Because I've seen a few LTs and below on the blue side with them. Oh wait, they were SWOs, and that makes sense I guess. How are they supposed to stab each other in the back without them?

I've had a couple instances of TSA standing around looking at my sword while I was in transit for weddings. They just kind of got that glazed, Vincent Vega look in their eyes and called their buddies over. Secretly, I think we made it so shiny because, hey, we're Marines, and Marines like to look at shiny things.

O-4 and above are required to have one.

Guys the Navy swords look pretty damn nice. You are warriors and leaders, get yourself a d@mn sword, you wont regret it. My Mamaluke is in a closet but I still take it out and looka t it from time to time.

The Navy sword has several sea serpents on it and is very cool looking. My grandfather gave me his, and its been pretty worthwhile to have. I've never had to use it for an "official" function yet, but it sure comes in handy for all those military weddings. Plus, it looks cool sitting on the bookshelf.

Now that's the right idea. To me, passing down something like that just epitomizes traditions that we're so proud of. I would have my uncle's Mamaluke, but it was rendered unserviceable a long time ago (long story).

If for some reason all the radars I'm gonna sit on in the next few years don't sterilize me, I'd love to be able to pass it on to the next generation of my family that decides to go to sea.

My only gripe with the sword is that the handle is made of plastic that tries to look like shark/skate skin. I would love to get some real skate skin on there, but don't know if something like that is possible.
