OCS injury not getting any better..

alright, i asked for advice a while back but no replies. I was sent home due to 3 different stress fractures, and my reserve side is screwing me over with medical. Im still not close to being healed and the doctors that i see are not giving me any help. Can anyone relate to this situation, or give advice to what i should do.?

I would think that they would send me to a sports medicine dr, but that has not been the case. I have been home since the middle/end of February.

Stevo,

There isn't much good advice anyone on here can give....except to see a doctor....orhtopod or sports medicine....You may even have to pay out of pocket. Medical advice over the internet is not advisable. Maybe you are just venting...fine, but, you should realize that without an examination, there is no way any practioner...MD, ATA, joe-off-the-street....whatever....can give you sound information on which a career riding decision might be made.

How is the reserve side screwing you?

First, feddoc is absolutely right. Go see a doctor for a real diagnosis over forum opinions.

All I was going to say is that all I've ever heard about healing stress fractures is to stop using those bones and avoid weight-bearing / impact stress activity for a while. If you keep stressing stress fractures, especially too hard, they can turn in to full fractures pretty easy.

why would he have to pay out of pocket.... his injury at OCS occured while he was on 'active' duty in the marine corps. my oso has helped two people get the USMC to incur the financial responsibility, one had back problems, and the other a stress fracture in the foot. Thats why your're insured while youre there.

Absolutely right. I've had more than enough cracked bones to say that the best way to cure stress fractures is to STOP PUTTING WEIGHT ON IT. It's not uncommon to have to do time on crutches to help it heal. I ignored this during OCS and ended up with a metarsal that was so screwed up I had big shards of bone sticking out at ~45 degree angle from it, stabbing into the soft tissue of my foot. Which of course created other problems.
But anyway, see a specialist. A orthopedic doctor should be able to help. Luckily I lived in an SEC town where football was king, so there was no shortage of sports medicine specialists.
In short, stay off of it, see a specialist, and get better so you can try again. Good luck.

That's why I asked the question: "How is the reserve side screwing you?"

well, i have been to 3 different doctors. Primary doc, a ortho surgeon, and a rehab doc. They keep saying that i am fine, and have no reason why i am still in pain. Have had x rays, and Bone scan. The scan did not take well(had the same problem with the one at bethesda) but they said it looked ok.

Reserve side. Well, it first took 37 days from the time i got home, to the time i saw a doc. They did not know how to feel out the paper work and the SOP, so i had to make all the call, do all the work,,etc. now, My doc has taken 10-15 days of vacation during this time, and cant seem to get any thing done. I was supposed to start rehab 19 days ago, but they still take forever with the paper work.

Any who, Im not able to run yet, have been taping them, and stretching, but still in pain. My Goal is to get ready for package submission in august for the october class, but not sure if i will be ready.

yes i am venting, because no one really seems to care about the situation..the reserve side bitc*** about how i get paid for not doing anything.

any way, just wanted some advice on what to do. Thanks bros..

Come on, the FBI would have given him twins!
if you have to see a primary, then it should be for the referral to the ortho. if they're making you do that, see someone who specializes in sports med.

then ask about seeing a physical therapist, again one who specializes in sports medicine as opposed to hip replacements, instead of a third doctor. short of this, you can see a certified athletic trainer-- they are qualified to help you with rehab. definitely talk to your ortho about the physical therapy-- you may not need to do it-- depends on how long you're off your feet/ what your diagnosis is.

what everyone is telling you is true--

calcium will help, and vitamins k and d will help. k you get from green leafy veggies, and it helps you absorb the calcium. d, you get from the sun or a multivitamin, and it helps with the k.

staying off of the bones is what you need to be doing. you may be in a wheelchair for a little bit, if it the problem is fractures, and is in both legs. do not run or lift or jump up curbs until you've seen a qualified physician.

ABSOLUTELY see a doctor. (even if you have to shell out the clams yourself.) if your primary doesn't know of one, or you're not comfortable with what they tell you, you can call a local high school or university with a great athletic team, and ask their sports medicine staff who their team physician is. then just ask for the referral to that physician.

if you get on it now, you could be up and running by october.

if you have any more questions, pm me. hope this helps a little.

i have a dr. appointment with a Doc this coming week, and he said he will refer me to a podiatrist(hopefully one with sport emphasis) as well as starting the rehab this week. Thanks for all the advice, and i will be updating with Dr.'s diagnosis.

well, 6 Rehab visits, and all i get is soreness. They just push, pull, stretch my feet, and have no idea why it is not getting any better.
Frustration is increasing daily. I tell everyone it is sharp pains, and they say it's just soft tissue, and it needs working out. WTF?

just venting i guess.

stevo01,

Sorry to hear you aren't getting better. The symptoms do sound like a soft tissue injury...but, you gotta understand that medical advice over the internet isn't worth much.

Are you still saying off your foot?

Are you wearing the orthotics?

Seems like they have ruled out a stress fracture.

Are you doing your own taping? Generally speaking, that is not a good idea......sort of like doing your own menisectomy.

Have the docs ruled out an MRI?

well, i had a bone scan around the middle of march. Xrays were positive, but scan was negative.

no orthotics, they are waiting to make that decision.
im doing only the walking necesarry, nothing strenious.

they tape it for me, but its only short relief. Guess im gonna f-ing miss the 190 and have to go back in the Frozen Chosen in january, once again...**** it was cold

thanks for the reply..
