I'd agree with a .22 for training, but for self defense look at the S&W Ladysmith. A "number" of my female friends carry a shoot them, in both .38 and .357 configurations. They are properly sized for a female's hand, so grip and retention are not an issue.

I'll throw my hat in the ring for the Ruger MkII Target (with the heavy barrell). I have one and shoot about 100 rounds through it before I even take the .45 out of its case. It's a great way to reinforce the fundamentals before breaking out the bigger (and more expensive to shoot) pistols. The pistol is very well-balanced, has a decent trigger on it, and has virtually no recoil. My fiance, who isn't the keenest on guns and can't shoot for sh!t (yet), absolutely loves shooting my Mk. II.

With high velocity .22 LR hollow points (CCI Stinger, etc) The Sig would be a fine self defense weapon for a woman..
