Would highly recommend looking at the Kimber KPD, as close to AMBI as I have seen. Loaded with safety features. Downside is 10MM but 9MM on the way (where have I heard that before?).

I taught my girlfriend to shoot with an H&K USP Compact 9mm, and it was fine for her.

But I guess a .22 probably would be better to learn on.

I eventually want to get a 9mm for her. I think at this stage though, it would do more harm than good. I want her to have fun with her first gun so she's not scared away from bigger and better things.

You might want to check out the Springfield XD. Lightweight, numerous safety features, and inexpensive. There are also numerous calibers available, including 9mm.

May I suggest the Sig Sauer mosquito? About 90% the size of a P226, it has a manual saftey/decocking lever, tac rail, 10 round mag, and its a Sig Sauer.
