100701-N-2953W-300 SAN DIEGO (July 1, 2010) Vice Adm. Allen G. Myers, right, relieves Vice Adm. Thomas J. Kilcline Jr. as commander of Naval Air Forces during a change of command ceremony aboard the aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70). Kilcline retired after 37 years of service as a Naval aviator. Vice Adm. Myers' bio says he is a graduate of USAFA. Is that a mistake on the bio? O-9 would be fairly unusual for an interservice transfer, wouldn't it?

There are guys who cross commission from the different service academies.

Everyone starts on equal footing. There are two SEAL admirals who decided to forego Air Force careers out of USAFA and commissioned into Navy in order to go to BUD/S.

What's with the O-6 in the background with no warfare device (ie SWO pin, wings, etc)? I thought that everyone got something these days. (Not to denigrate his service, just curious.)

I'd be willing to bet the chaplain corps doesn't have a warfare device :)

Looks like something other than a star on his shoulder boards but can't make it out.

if you haven't been to many Changes of Command, the folks who get to sit up on platform are the incoming and outgoing honorees and their immediate reporting senior who "officiates" over the proceedings and outranks them. Others who get the best seats in the house are the Command Master Chief/Senior Enlisted Member, guest speaker (may be different than reporting senior) and....drum roll...the Chaplain who delivers the pre and post event prayer and typically is most junior officer on podium

That's the Force Chaplain, CAPT (Rabbi) "Irv" Elson. His shoulder boards have the scrolls that show the Ten Commandments. He was with the Marines prior to when you could be awarded the FMF device, although he passed all the quals. A great servant leader.

Wow. Got to see the good Admiral when he came to address our wardroom. A fine man and Naval Officer. And now he passes the torch.
