BOth of my parents are retired USN (they just loved my decision to join the Corps) and when I get commissioned next month, I wanted to give them a little memento.

Dad was a pilot and mom a Chief, so I've been scouring ebay for wings and anchors from WWII. I found a nice anchor that the seller claims came from a WWII chief, but I can't find any pics of what insignia from the 40s looks like. I want to make sure I didn't get duped here.

I attached a pic of the anchor I have. I would really appreciate some uniform/rank insignia studs telling me exactly what I have here.

I can vaguely remember reading something that claimed all WWII CPO anchors had the askew "N" in USN, and this was changed shortly thereafter.

correction: upon closer inspection, there is a small shield (extremley small, my camera can't capture it) right above the lower clasp for the pin. I have attached 2 more pics, one with my cover device (for size comparison, if it will be any help) and one for the back.

Thanks for any help!

Let's see .... Dad's a Pilot ... Mom's a Chief ... So is your Mom the Chief('s) Pilot these days ..... ??? :)

(I have some stuff relating to your 'real' question ... I will see if I can dig it out and provide an answer ..... )

Boy, I tell you, there are some short fuses out there ..... "Need a little help"?? ... well, that's what you'll get. In spite of your lousy attitude toward my previous feeble attempt at humor, I'll go ahead and waste my time providing you with an answer to your question --- here's what you've got, sport:

WW2 Navy CPO insignia --- and note the tilted "N". The pin on the back is also indicative of older, pre-70's insignia. The chief petty officers' insignia was adopted in 1886 and was also worn on the tropical pith helmet.

By the way --- my parents were divorced, too. Not a pretty one --- I just don't get huffy about it.

Oh yeah, you're welcome with the insignia help .... (all smiles .... :) )
