I've heard that there are sometimes special regulations/rules for motorcycles on bases/stations. Just wondering if any of them were true. Thanks for any input.

Yes it is true. You have to wear a reflective vest and helmet. I think that's pretty much it. I don't remember anything major that stood out other than those.

Yeah, those are the things that I had heard about. What about if you've already taken a private party rider course that is part of the MSF?

There is a DoD directive on rules and regulations on motorcycle safety and it is standardized throughout all bases. It requires you to wear helmet, boots, gloves, durable pants (jeans are approved), leather jacket and reflective vest. You must also have taken a DoD sponsered safety course. At one time, DoD also forced motorcylcist to attach orange flags on the white poles for added visibility. Some one got smart and removed that point. If you are a US service member on active duty, these regulations will be adhered to on and OFF base. If you have an accident off base and you were found wearing just shorts and a tank top and tennis shoes and not the required safety gear then you can be found "not in the line of duty." What that means is that the US goverment is not responsible for your medical treatment or future complications from those injuries. SF, Frumby

Just to back up the Major here, while I was assigned to Ft Hood we had a fine young soldier in a sister battalion who got messed up pretty bad in an off post accident wearing shorts, t-shirt, etc and I think he is still paying back his medical costs. Sorry, no "Maverick racing the Tomcat" scenes in your future.

Trust me, I like to look cool. At the same time though, I don't want to have to pay for medical costs in case something did happen. I would have no problem wearing the required gear.

And Micheal Webb, I already have a real bike, 01 GSX-R 600

(haha)

Thanks for the info

I have a friend who wrecked his bike when we were in the Marines. It was his fault and he wasn't warrying everything that he was supposed to, but the Corps still paid his medical bills.I guess sometimes you just get lucky.
If I don't sell my bike before I leave for OCS, I'l be taking it with me. It's GSX-R 750. I did a few things to it and have it up to 140hp. Real fast, but nothing like the jet thatI hope to fly!

Gentlemen, about taking your bikes to OCS. DON'T DO IT!!! The Officer Candidate Regulations (the bible of OCS) says that candidates will not ride motorcycles during training. We had a safety standdown during training that turned out to be a "don't ride motorcycles" brief.

I waited until after OCS and had the Navy ship my bike to Pensacola with all of my other personal goods. This won't happen until after API, if your a pilot. So you may have to wait a while.

Good luck in OCS.

Sorry, gotta relight this thread b/c even after all the regulation reading I've done I can't believe I didn't know i had to wear a reflective vest offbase. Good tip. I gotta think a riding jacket with reflective tape would work .. hmmm. Also, safety course doesn't have to be the Navy's . It just has to be approved and MSF courses are DoD approved. The courses on base are free so there's that. All the bases I've ridden on don't require a leather jacket (i haven't actually read the DoD order). They will require long sleeves (aramid flight suit, cotton, Michael Duhamel jacket, whatever).

Happy Riding.

Sounds like there are plenty of riders either in the Pensacola area or going to be there soon. I'm bringing my '02 GSX-R 600 in a couple of weeks. Now the question is... how is the riding around there? There were certainly plenty of nice twisties within a short driving distance of Memphis. But here in Dayton, OH, it's flat and straight unless you drive at least 2 hours to southeastern Ohio. Any good stuff near Pensacola?? I'm also taking the Navy course on June 25-27 on base.

Rainmain....you're correct on the jacket. I took the MSF here last September and was told by the Master Chief giving the class that a "light colored" jacket or a jacket with a given amount of reflective tape (don't know the coverage specs) is approved over a reflective vest. He left a lot open for interpretation though. Doesn't have to be leather. You just have to be wearing long sleeves...one of those you mentioned are acceptable.

Good to see you're still around!
