Go north to Alaska! You can have a home on the beach in SE Alaska (don't recommend Juneau if you don't like liberals) with endless salt water, tons of tasty fauna, very liberal gun laws (isn't that ironic how the word can have a positive meaning?) and be left the hell alone.

I dream of having my own personal island near Sitka (easily doable if you've got the scratch), sitting on my deck, watching the waves roll in, rifle and dog by my side... Oh to dream I say!

To prevent this from turning into a liberal bashing thread, I will say that the far right also wants to control you. They try to take my porn and say what language is appropriate to us on TV/radio ("because our children are watching").

I am defiantly Right leaning but I can't stand that 'push my religious values on you' shit.

ACTUALLY .... that is exactly what one of my airline buddies did -- the private island thing -- the only real "challenge" was power and telephone, but he got it done. He loves it and even comes down to "civilization" once in a while ...

I think Alaska is a great place -- don't think I've seen more awe-inspiring sights than witnessed flying over it during my airline career. It's the last, true American frontier ...

I've actually been there -- on the ground -- a lot over the last 25 years. I just don't think Trophy Wife would buy off on the 8+ month winters -- she's a beach girl w/ 75+ degree temps required. But then again, watchin' the Iditarod start from Blondie's Cafe after an "Anchorage breakfast" has been know to get your mind right and change opinions ...

All for it but wife is from New England and misses it. I miss NUW badly and I'd be very happy in Idaho. I also have work waiting for me in NE in my same company. (good work on a brownshoe project it's beginning to look like!). Plan is get up there, buy in a depressed market, build a cabin further north to escape to.

ah! you speak to my heart! Though really, the winters aren't that bad in Southeast Alaska - very comparable to Whidbey, just a bit colder (but not much). Anchorage gets f'ing cold, though nothing compared to Fairbanks (that place just sucks ass). The summers in central Alaska are pretty warm.

Alas, I digress. But I must address your "Alaskan Breakfast" comment. I find this truly heartless! Heartless I say! Though the Land of the Rising Sun offers a great deal, breakfast is one thing that totally escapes them (along with burgers and pizza)!

Sorry man, but you are never going to convince me that a wind chill of -30 is actually better than something. I wouldn't have even known that Celsius and Fahrenheit were equal at -40 had it not been for 2.5 winters in Anchorage.

Anchorage is balmy man! I did one winter in Fairbanks where it was -50...without wind chill (no wind to speak of anyhow). Was f'ing cold. So I moved to Minnesota for the rest of my college education.

Much warmer.

Diverted in WV to Anchorage - fuel leak. Proper uniform of day for Barbers Point; Trop Khaki. -25F with 20mph breeze. Tower, correctly so, would not let A/C near the terminal. Walked (too cold to run) half length of field. Survived.

Yep… I can see it now! I’ll be off on a Sunday afternoon to my friend, Robert’s farm in Dickerson to shoot some trap with my *single shot* Browning, BT99 and get arrested for having a concealed weapon and a hundred rounds of “reloaded 12 gauge paper shells.” Yep, the BT99 is of course the weapon of choice for all criminals. West Virginia is lookin’ better as the years go on Chief.
