We had a saying at the Citadel that I think sums up about every military college out there: " It's a great school to be from, a crappy school to be at" Military colleges are good in some aspects: Nothing beats the discipline that you'll get there, the educations are usually first rate, and the stringent Honor Code that you live by while you're there helps set you up to be an officer of integrity. That being said, they also have some negatives. I know that many grads of military colleges tend to be socially retarded when we first graduate. It's a product of only getting to be a normal young adult 3 nights a week. And unless you get a summer apartment alot of military school guys have trouble with things like bills and grocery shopping and stuff like that when they first graduate. Again, the four years they were at their respective institutions that stuff was taken care of for them. Summary: Military colleges are excellent places for developing things that are really important in life; honor, integrity, self-discipline, hard work, accountability, how to put up with bullsh!t . But they tend to lack in some of the other areas of life; Independence, living on a budget, how to throw a good party where the there aren't 15 dudes and 1 girl. Things of that nature. In the end, a military college is definately worth it. So hang in there don't let The Man bring you down, have a little fun amongst all the push-ups, and look towards the day when you get to cross the stage and say: "I'm an Alumni".

Edit: not hating on civilian schools; I know some good officers that went to civilian schools. They each have their pros and cons

-"Easy" (recently changed to "Mongo")

Belive it or not I root for VMI and for that matter, all the military colleges/ service academies when they are not playing El Cid..good luck this weekend against Richmond...only 4 home games..wow thats not very many, I'm sure the cadets love it!

BUT I am curious...what is there to do in Lexington? When I went up there last year for the game, there was NOTHING up there with the exception of like 1 bar

We haze ourselves. (We do do it, as a joke, pretty funny sh!t). :D

The plebe training atmosphere is cyclical. When my dad was there ('77) there were no spot corrections, then they brought them back, and ended them after '05's plebe summer. Plebe summer/year will always suck, no matter what the SOP is. Don't let people give you crap about "not having a real plebe summer". From what I hear you got as good a one as we did... but don't tell your firsties I told you that.

Actually, there are three bars, and a bunch of good restaurants. Other than that, we go to Staunton, JMU, Richmond, Roanoke, and Tech for fun. And we Rats haze ourselves, it's fun. Dan, do y'all still brace/strain at The Academy? Do you have sweat parties?

Oh, and NavyFan, we're taking a Corps Trip down to Charleston for the game, so perhaps we can discuss this whole Shako thing face-to-face, while touring the city. I'll fill you in on the details when I know them. And the Richmond game sucked, but the weekend liberty was awesome. :D

Most that I know who did the military high school then college were so burned out being toy soldiers that they elected not to go in the real military.
I honestly would discourage my son from military high school but have no problem with him looking at military collge.

I was in a military high school for my junior and senior years. I hate kids who do get really wound up with the toy soldier deal, cause no, it isn't real. I can't wait till I get my commission in a few years and am out with the real deal. I do like how the 2 years of military hs prepared me for military college though.

Please preface all future posts about having attended military high school with: "My parents didn't love me, but..."

Thank you. ;)

As per Brett's request :) : ''My parents didn't love me, but...'' hey, not all of us can have a perfect family or childhood, Brett. You just take what life gives you and make the best of it.

It's a few sizes off, but the point is that the two do not always coincide. I went to a military high school to prepare more for the academy, which I was declined acceptance to regardless, but that does not matter to me. I am still on the path towards a commission and do enjoy being in a military school.

Hey, man. Whatever gets you through the day. I was orphaned at birth and raised by a pack of wild jackals.
