Manhattan aviation accident...

Already happened in Florida after 9/11. A kid, I think 15, took off without his flight instructor and crashed in a similar fashion. It was deemed a suicide.

If this was intentional, Im glad that no one else was hurt or killed. Only one casualty has been reported so far.

My guess is suicide or accident. Somebody's high rise condo does not seem to be a high ranking target for terrorism.

CNN was reporting at least 2 casualties. Also the location of the building and the crash site seem a bit weird. I can't really figure out how you would go into that side of the building and at that angle. It is protected a bit by a smoke stack and another building.

joe torre said pitcher corey lidle was the pilot and has been killed.

i live right in the area, the sidewalks should not be that crowded since it is a dead end street with the east river right there. hopefully limited casualties

ESPN is also reporting it was Yankees pitcher Cory Lidle.
Cirrus SR22
4 people confirmed dead (one report)
2 people confirmed dead (pilot/1 in appt; another report)

A news article says that all Cirrus aircraft are equipped with an airframe parachute. Never heard of that.

A tragedy ... and it always is , to be sure ... but:

Without knowing anything ... the signs are there: Another guy with too much money ... too much time on his hands ....

The mountains of Western Washington are scattered with them ... doctors, dentists, lawers, internet millionaires ... "smart guys" ... "rich guys" ... the Islands of the Hawaiian Chain are scattered with them ....

Flying is serious business ... only the qualified should apply ....

Money and time doesn't qualify you.

reminds me of a time at OCS prep weekend at Ft. Indiantown Gap when a cessna flew about 80 feet over our heads, and our OSO (a C-130 pilot) yelled in an angry tone "THAT ****IN GUY IS A DENTIST"

The reports say the plane may have run out of fuel, but with that amount of fire I have my doubts that the plane had no fuel on-board. One would hope that the instructor flying with him wouldn't have let the plane run out of fuel. Of course, I could be wrong. Maybe it ruptured gas lines in the building?

Ran out of fuel? So they crash into a building? Even if that's so... how is it relevent? They crashed into a building.

That was my issue... Poor SA?
My thought was perhaps he was flying solo and with his cash had a glass cockpit on his SR22. Too busy flying heads down to realize he was into a building (as the map on a glass would only show terrain and probably not the appt complex)? But the reports on here say it was with an instructor.
So perhaps they were too busy reading the check list to fly the plane?

Who knows, it will be a while before any sort of truth comes out. What is certain, if it was a Cirrus, and it was a mechanical failure, that is HORRIBLE PR. Flying into a building 9/11 style, with a Yankee pitcher, is going to produce about as much news coverage as GA can produce.
