Looking for a female perspective on OCS

Going to OCS in March
I used to the have the “in between” length of hair. I personally chose to grow it longer to get it up in a bun for OCS.

Those that came to Newport with the “in between” length, had to chop their hair shorter with eyebrow scissors to get in regs……you don’t have easy access to a real barber/haircutter shop as a female, so I saw this happen twice.

Pick a lane, either short or grow it out unless you want to butcher your own haircut.

Mine was "in between", tried a pretty terrible bun until I really gave up and went to the barber. You can still go to the barber as a woman. Do not cut your own hair. I asked for something between a "pixie" and a "mullet" and it actually worked out well for regs. The 5 min showers aren't worth it for having long hair. Chopping my hair was worth it, was able to get back to ponytail length in API.

Mileage on ease of ability to see a barber in the first couple of weeks may vary…..

I went at the tail end of COVID when things were extra restrictive and the CO was “allegedly” relieved early for a host of COVID related issues…. All the restriction lifted with the new leadership

From what I’ve heard of recent accounts, this should be easier. So go to the barber….. if you can’t, you’ll find some scissors somewhere…….

Females who recently graduated OCS, how was dealing with your period like those three months?😭 I get pretty bad cramps and I usually rely on pain meds to relieve it. Has it ever gotten painful? Are we able to take Tylenol with us there?

If you don’t get any feedback, you might have luck finding similar posts on here.

Lastly, have your recruiter get you in touch with a local female OHARP, if one is around. That way you can get support and coaching in person.

The CoC has had a complete turnover since I was there, but the short answer is no, they don’t let you keep pain meds with you without a doc note.

Unless something has changed, just bring a written note and you’ll be good.

hi!!!

soooo i believed the gouge (gossip) that i would lose my period at OCS so i didn't pack any pain meds for it and boy was i wrong lol. i ended up getting my period every month while i was there, and actually got it a week earlier probably because of the stress. i don't have a super bad cycle but i also take pain meds for it.

each class team is different in how they search your bags when you come in, but my class team had us open our suitcases and take out meds not prescribed like pain medication.

whenever you want to get pain meds for things like your period, you have to go to "sick call" at King Hall and fill out a sick form, be seen by the doctor there, and then they'll prescribe you a shit ton of ibuprofen or (if you ask for it) they'll give you a chit to go get a heating pad from the NEX and the candios have to take you to the NEX to get one. the only downside about going to sick call is that if you are sick THAT morning or dealing with your period THAT morning, you suffer all day until your meds come in that night and then you get your medication. my recommendation is that if you don't get to keep your pain meds, go to sick a couple days before you think you'll have it and get the pain meds in advance. when i went, they gave me a shit ton of ibuprofen (atleast 30 tablets) so it would last me through a couple periods.

better yet, go to sick within the first few days of the first week and just tell them you have cramps and get ibuprofen ahead of time, so then you are ready for when you have your period. it also kills two birds with one stone for when you are sore after getting pitted LOL

edit: i just left OCS so this is pretty recent info

Thai you so much for this! You are a literal life saver. I always get terrible cramps the morning of my first and second day, knowing I could do this is so helpful! One question tho, is would they give you shit for calling in sick the first two weeks??
