I just heard a rumor that 50 Midshipmen at the academy will be receiving LOI's for violating the internet policy. My question is, what is an LOI, and what does it do? Are they permanent, or do they get expunged after a period of time?

They should all be so lucky as to receive non-punitive letters of caution - suitable for framing, of course.

As of right now no "official" word has been passed. But in the 4 days before the academy put up a new firewall preventing free access to the internet, it is said that 250,000+ porn websites were visited by the brigade. The top 50 midshipmen in violation are going to receive LOI's for their actions. That is why I posed my question. I'm not saying I'm innocent, but I doubt I'm in the top 50, but I'm still curious as to what this punishment is.

Why would anyone look at porn on a Gov't computer? Those people deserve to be punished for their own stupidity.

As to the punishment, you're all going to hell, as Jesus frowns upon autoerotic activities of any kind.

I'm new here and very new to the Navy, so I find it helpful to have a military abbreviations translator open in the window next to airwarriors so I can avoid asking silly and annoying questions. One I have found particularly helpful is http://www.globemaster.de/html/dictionary.html
most non military abbrs can be found in urbandictionary.com

I put LOI in and it stands for letter of instruction; by googleing I found the below paragraph from an enlisted student at prototype (website: http://www.everything2.com/index.pl?node=Captain's%20Mast) Hope it helps a bit. Good luck at school.

"The Letter of Instruction was the last stop before Dishonorable Discharge in our little world. It was a short list of orders that the student had to carry with them at all times, and be prepared to present at any time, while demonstrating fulfillment of each order. The orders themselves were fairly simple; be in a presentable uniform, have your room inspection ready at all times, maintain grades, etc. Failure to fulfill an order on the list meant you were going home."

If its Websense, we have had that the entire time I've been at my school, except they took away our "Continue" button last year.:(

We have also had 3rd party email taken away and restrictions put on AIM. This is all on personal computers of course.

Actually, their computers are personal computers - bought and paid for by the midshipman (hence the reason they get $500 and some change a month, but only see from $50-225 of it). The network however, is a government network.

Back when the net was new, porn site usagae was rampant at USNA. We sent a fake email to my buddy telling him we were the FBI and were tracking his internet porn usage. He sh!t himself to say the very least...

Last time they had an internet crackdown was with facebook. They threatened the same thing but nothing happened. So I wouldnt worry about it, keep your nose clean, and download porn at the sponsors house.

Not Academy, but here in the frozen north, my neighbor down the hall was downloading some godawful number of gigs of porn a day of porn, (I think he was actually distributing the stuff...) so the college actually cut off his bandwidth.

Point is: even if you aren't at USNA, don't be surprised if you are being "spied on" at some level while in college...

Shoot, the internet crackdown that happened while I was there resulted in a company-sized restriction muster for the next 60 days. I think it was around 110 people or so. Then there were a few who left because they didn't want to face the charges against them, whatever those were.

Lock people up, give them no access to television, no access to the female populace, and then get pissed off when they look at porn, download music, or join the darkside. It makes as much sense as about 90% of the other stuff that goes on there (how much are you paying for the cobbler shop now?) Yes, we ought to have excercised restraint as future officers, but sometimes it's really not all that surprising what happens in the hall.
