why do some old threads need to be locked? this happens often, and some of them ("it's not all choker white and dining out", for example, i can understand), but the one about "coke, soda, or pop," why does that have to be closed? why can't new people participate in that?

Other mods may give differing opinions but here's why I would do it.

1) It wasn't even aviation/military related to begin with
2) It has run its course

Concur. Alot of threads just have new people repeating the same arguments because they're too lazy to read previous posts in the thread. I'm gonna lock this one too...just kidding.

i just wondered if it was necessary, but i guess it doesn't really matter that much. and there is some understandable logic to that reasoning.

Was there like a memo that went around to the moderators to start "cracking down" on the randomness of threads because I've only been seeing it in the last week or two.

something to that effect
that's all that needs to be said
stay on topic, stop bringing back OLD threads to rehash flame wars, and try to stick to the basis of the site.

right... that is what the War Zone is for, so if we want to debate whether or not it is or isn't all choker whites and dining outs, take it there. ;)

the power's just going to their heads thats all. and boredom most likely. i dont agree with locking threads if they're not hurting anyone. too bad i didnt jump on the "who wants to be a moderator" bandwagon..i'd start unlocking some just cuz.

No, it's definitely not that. All the mods have had the power to lock threads since the site went to its new format. But like squeeze said,

Which is why I locked it.

Locking old threads is going to start happening some. If there is any major heartache about a particular thread then PM the person who shut it down (or PM the webmaster I guess if you don't want to talk to the person who did it?).

they're usually the last one to post on that thread they get the last word.

When I lock one I write a post and put "LOCKED" at the bottom of it (usually with a short explaination, like this thread is crappy/old/needed to be euthanized years ago/etc.). I say usually that's what I do, but truth be told my head is so big (sure it is Rare :sleep_125 ) that I've locked a mamoth 2 threads so far. Some mods might not tell you who locked them, or if they were deleted you'll never know. Suffice to say that the mods probably won't lock anything that is (1) aviation or military related, (2) not dissolved into a flame war, or run it's course, or (3) not already asked and answered in another thread.

Of course, I can't speak for everyone, and every case might be different, but this place is intended to be primarily Aviation related (see the welcome message ...).

i'll just wait till the "locking threads" fad has run its course. probably a fun little toy right now but hopefully it'll get old. (it already is)
