Danny's Palm Bar and Grill on Orange Ave (Coronado) has great burgers.

Why eat burgers when your in San Diego? EAT MEXICAN FOOD.

I cant remeber the exact name of the place, but it is just about adjacent to the dive center down underneath the Coronado Bridge. Something Milpas. During lunch hours lines are always out the door.

Mr. Taco in La Jolla is a good staple too.

Depends on the place, but the california burrito is usually the better choice than the carne asada.

If you must have a burger, In-N-Out is always my go-to, although still havent been this summer.

KCBBQ... Overpriced and not all that great. But then again it's downtown SD so it's going to be overpriced. The gaslamp has some pretty good places. I wish the Spaghetti Factory was still down there.

I mentioned it because of its connection to Top Gun. You're right about the food though (esp coming from REAL BBQ in Texas).

If you like fish tacos I also suggest Rubios. Its the home of the fish taco, and there is one right in the airport downstairs at the foodcourt.

Taco Tuesday was my first mention, thank you very much. And besides, you don't eat Mexican EVERY day.

Of course you can, but it comes with consequences...

Thanks for the advice so far, but I'm also speaking from a learning standpoint from a MIDN, anyone have any things in terms of like operations on board the ship I should definitely learn about/see/experience?

And what's the deal with the Marines lining up?

If someone is flying try getting into the tower and/or HDC. I would say TACC but I doubt anything useful would come of that on a short underway period, I don't even know if anybody works there when TACRON isn't embarked.

I'll put in a plug for maintenance and say try to get down to AIMD to look around and ask some questions. There won't be much maintenance going on without people flying but it could be your best, if not only chance to see what kind of work those guys do.

Grunts on a boat don't have much to do but wait in line. Sometimes the chow line would go down the hall to the hangar, up the ramp to the flight deck, then down the other side back to the hangar. Those guys would literally each lunch, go take a dump, then get back in line for dinner. They would rather sit there all afternoon than have to "wait" in line for food.

That ship has a 2 lane bowling alley that is only open in port and when the seas are less then pitch 1 roll 2. That will give you something to do between working out and waiting in line for chow.
Holy crap, you've got 2 lanes? Hell I thought there was only 1 on ships, and usually the wait was so damn long that you had to make a reservation 3 days in advance.
It got retro fitted about 3 years ago with 2 lanes. Often times one lane is E-7 and above (during certain hours). The rest is first come first serve except at sea during which time you can reserve a lane for 2 games only (4 people max per lane).
I'm surprised there was only one brief comment about this one... ;) I'm also surprised that the mid didn't ask where to find it...

Don't forget cleaning rifles and inventorying gear. Guys from my shop would get so bored that they'd actually look forward to going to the vehicle/well deck to inventory radios. And you can't lame us for focusing on chow so much. There will come a time on some floats when you're down to one MRE a day in some despicable land with despicable people while all of the sailors are still eating biscuits and gravy and drinking sweet tea. We may love our chow, but by the time we get back on the boat this is about what the chief's mess looks like.

Sorry, I should have clairified... That represented a typical Battalion Air Officer/FAC's day on the boat. Grunts and Pilots have other crap to do...

Why the hell do you think I want to be an aviator...It ain't to fly. It's for the FAC/AO gorund tour. It's so I can sit in the corner of the COC, BS with Fires, and pretend I'm talking on the radio so the 6 doesn't ask me any hard questions. Oh, and so I can yell at the DASC and tell them they're the stupidest beings on the planet.
