If it's an option, why wouldn't we do it? Less trap and cat shots on the airframes, no night traps, nicer quarters, better logistical support................and so on. The only possible downside would be base security.

Why have carriers at all then? There are a whole host of reasons we don't do it very often and much of it has to do with flexibility and control, both of which the carrier provides in spades while land-based aircraft can be somewhat limited due to everything from host-nation issues/concerns/politics/SOFA, force protection, ramp space, support limitations and simple logistics like food, fuel supply and even something as mundane as visa issues.

There are a lot of advantages to 4.5 acres of sovereign US territory available whenever and wherever we need it on world's oceans.
 
Because in some cases it made more sense to have a 15 minute transit to your op-area instead of 1.5 hour transit with additional stops at the gas station. The ability to do this depends on a whole host of issues and permissions. I would also offer that it was the norm for certain CVW squadrons for the better part of five years, but again, specific requirements in specific locations that are difficult to predict/plan to.

To @jmcquate point about no night traps and nicer quarters... The lack of night traps is a big reason not to do it. You need your pilots to maintain enough currency to safely get the jets cycled back and forth to the boat, and the "airport" doesn't close down at night. The living quarters... That depends on your perspective. JO's, in many cases, preferred the ship and the minor-luxuries that officers are afforded; the Sailors seemed to much prefer the "beach" because they got rooms with one or two other guys, the food was better, and the overall QOL higher. How you see things depends on where you stand.

Again, apples and oranges. We did our deployments out of choice and note necessity, not so much with the Russians. To compare the two gives the Russians way too much credit and us too little.
 
I stand corrected. What both of you wrote makes sense. I guess that's why, for the most part, the only Navy tac air on the beach in OIF/OEF were VAQs because they were the only game in town. Same situation in Kosovo with the Prowlers at Aviano.
 
They mention the pilot's OK, which is good, but he/she's not the only one at risk when a CDP lets go. Hope the flight deck crew is also OK. :(
