I just have to take the SAT or ACT. Dont you need your CO to reccommend you? Im not sure how that would work. Is the deadline over this year?
I'm thinking that a certain someone needs to read the STA-21 instruction.

I thought it was common knowledge that Nukes get automatic acceptance into STA-21. I would not look for advice from a nuke on how to get into the program unless you are a Nuke (and if you are all you have to do is submit your package). On a side note, I don't think its right that an individual should get picked up for the program without even sniffing the fleet.

I'll ignore the rest of your post, but no, nukes don't automatically get selected. DO more nukes get selected than other rates? It seems that way (I don't know the actual figures), but that just makes sense, as it's harder to become an enlisted nuke, than, say, a mess specialist (I'm not hating on the cooks, my BIL is one ;) )

edited for clarity- changed "be" to "become"

Most nukes I know can hardly dress themselves, let alone make a decent breakfast. Try not to bash other rates. All I'm going to say about that.

Most nukes I know need velcro shoes :) Too smart with no common sense. Honestly, I've seen way too many nukes in the STA-21N program. When I was an NROTC instructor, we had to let a few go back to the fleet....they just didn't cut the mustard.

All joking aside, we need nukes to run the reactors so we can get the end-speed off the catapult AND they make the steam for the catapults too (& hot water for our Hollywood showers). So, in my book, they do all of us Carrier Aviators a great service. Thank you Nukes, you really earn your Bonuses! ;) (because lord knows I couldn't live in a dark hole for days on end without fresh air...hence the "Snipe" names)

Has anyone heard of people other than Nukes making it the first time up (core or target)?

It's pretty evenly spread out amongst every group. I would say the most prominent of first timers were the nukes but every community has first time applicants here.

Prob gonna study a lil bit every so often for the SAT once I get to C school so I can get a good score. Then im gonna apply for STA-21 every year while i try to complete my degree so I can try for OCS if I dont get picked up for STA-21. Prob gonna wait till C school or my first duty station before I start picking up some extra volunteering cuz we dont get much free time here in A school.

To be honest with you, I think it just depends on how you do in the fleet that matters. They might have changed thier minds but using myself as and example...my SAT was minimum, no volunteering, only 6 hours of college credit...but at my command, submarines, i was command advanced from e3-e4 and e-5, and did everything I possibly could while onboard. So to sum it up, what I think they (the board) is looking for is your leadership and how much of an officer you are already because to be honest with you, depending on your NROTC, you dont learn anything.

Nope. Like I said above, they look at many parts of your academic history. A high SAT score can override lack of fleet experience or even a sub par command endorsement.
