I went through taco bell drivethrough tonight in bags, and the girl asked me if I was in "pilot school". I think she thought I fly cessnas and thought wearing the bag made me cool. Apparently my cool Hornet shoulder patch is on the wrong side. Evidently I haven't been flying them long enough, as I didn't break out into instinctive hand flying gestures or a "goddamn you I'm a fighter attack guy" :) I also had more than a couple folks at the NKX airshow (while I was in bags) ask me if I was a maintainer. Even the folks on base who do realize that I fly, automatically assume I'm a "helicopter copilot". I guess young looking guy = maintainer or helo pilot.....sorry helo friends, I mean this as no disrespect.

Thou shall NOT try to impress the drive-through girl at Taco Bell. Come on, raise the bar a little...

Socal taco bell girls are different I tell you........:)

@ statesman, I am just trying to relive the experience of eating a 7 layer burrito after being in the field at SERE for a week. God that was the best thing I ever ate....

If the Navy at some time starts making grumblings about a nomex version of the aquaflage, be afraid...be very afraid. I keep a green bag in a foot locker to remind myself what it used to feel like to look like an aviator...

The thought of that makes me cringe.

To those Marines who were around when USMC made the MARPAT change:

Was there ever a discussion about whether or not you would have the 8 point cover (as opposed to the Army's ball cap style)? The manner in which the sleeves were rolled? Bloused / unbloused boots?

8-point and blousing were never discussed.

Sleeves are a different story. There was talk of removable sleeves early on but that went away on the basis of faded cammies with non-faded sleeves that hadn't been on said cammies for while making one look like a bag of ass.

No on all counts. But there is a discussion going on now as to whether we'll continue rolling sleeves at all. We shall see.

I was around back then, and even thought that the surveys we were asked to fill out meant something.

Echo what teabag said. As far as blousing, there were the options to continue blousing as we currently do (with the FOD hazards known as boot bands) or go to WWI-style gaiters.

I'd be all for ceasing the sleeve rolling (it's actually less of a heat illness hazard if they're allowed to be loose-fitting, vice the constricting way we currently wear them), as well as getting rid of bloused boots. Again, a completely pointless, potentially hazardous uniform "tradition."

FWIW, NWUs seem popular on duty here for those that have them. The student hate against khakis is immeasurable, myself included. If I can't wear the bag, at least NWUs keep me out of polyester for 12 hours.

Well, belay my last then. I was at TBS when MARPAT made its debut and in Advanced when it became mando. I guess they never surveyed us non-fleet types at the time.

I don't think boot blousing will ever go away. Then you'd wind up looking like the varying degrees of Army assbaggery. Sleeves should stay rolled, but there needs to be base CO discretion, but apparently, that's "not uniform enough." You may take my cammie sleeve rolls, but you will never take my flight suit rolls.
