I was wondering if its possible to go from a jet to a helo.I know that crazy in most peoples mind but I think both are cool.

It's possible i suppose - why anyone would want to fly jets is beyond me, but i guess even a jet pilot can see the light eventually ;)

Why? I'd stick with whatever you get selected for. If you want helos, go helos to begin with.

Yes you can. The option is avail to Viking guys, but I don't think anyone has taken it yet. I also know that NFO's have the opportunity on the NFO to pilot board to select helo's too.

Go JETS to HELO's ... AH, YES, a question for the ages ??

..... The Chief Said ....That HELO drivers do NOT use/wear/tolerate underwear, nor anyone who does. Actually, that would be the only reason for me to go HELO's from JETs these days. I never personally checked out the Chief's gouge, I just maintained a healthy distance from all HELO drivers while at sea ... just in case the Chief was right.

That's the Chief and me at Tailhook '91, ..... talking 'bout HELOs .... we never did see what all THAT fuss was about. We stayed in the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" Suite --- never had a bit of trouble. Shortly after this was taken, however, I woke up in the hotel parking lot. I never did see the Chief or my wallet again. In fact, I am not even sure he was ever in the Navy. Maybe just a Chief ..... ??

To help this thread degenerate further, I thought I'd just say... Brett, you're absolutely right. I mean sheesh. Just this morning, I had to fly over to Molokai and fly through some jungle valleys (as seen in Jurassic Park III). Then I was forced to look at waterfalls. I was inconvenienced by a tour guide helo who was there, as well, complaining about how bumby it was for him.

Then I tolerated flying by Maui and seeing a bunch of whales jump out of the water while on my way to Lanai. An let me tell you how maddening it is to be cruising along at 50 to 100 feet next to some beaches. Then I had to endure doing some mission system checks of spitting sonobouys and tracking some research vessel while buzzing him, all while being forced to look at the clear moutain peaks of Oahu. And all this on a BITS flight, I mean have they no mercy?

The horror....

Just so you know, I used to crew 60s at HSL-44, so I can relate. Having experienced helos, P-3s and Prowlers, I'm just trying to impart a little light hearted perspective. I wouldn't trade my diverse background for anything, but I'm happy where I ended up.

Good times,

Brett

I hear ya. It wasn't meant in a negative way. Like you said, a little light hearted perspective. When were you at -44?

I was at 44 from '95-'98. We probably know lots of the same guys. Most of the DHs I knew have been through their CO tours, but the JOs should still be around. There are actually 3 Mayport HSL pilots (2 from 44 who were JOs when I was there as an E) that are in the Prowler community now. It's a strange, funny coincidence, but two of them have been involved in Class As. Neither incident was attributable to any aircrew action, but it's still kind of weird. Feel free to throw out some names (O-4 and above).

Good times,

Brett

Yeah, you were there at the same timeframe then, I'm guessing. My OIC is Gebo and for a while we had a SWTI here who was Zanger. My lead AT on cruise and now my LPO was from -44 also, but he may shown up after you left. I think he (Brazeal) came from 48 or 40 first.

I was actually there in August shore basing while our ship was doing some shoe thing. It was nice to have connections so we could get our neverending list of parts.

I know all those guys! Zanger was my DIVO for a while. He was a great guy, what a screwball. I know Brazeal too. If you see any of those guys, ask them if they remember AO1 Stevenson from 44. I left that squadron and went to OCS from there, but there are old LAMPS guys crawing around all over the place up at Whidbey. Anyway, good times.
