A simulation of the "aerial screw" designed by Leonardo da Vinci in 1480 suggests it would use less power than modern drone rotors to generate the same lift, and make less noise too

This an other brief available suggest that although theoretically interesting, designing and manufacturing such a structure would be quite challenging.

NASA has done some really in-depth study of quiet rotors, that show much promise in the near future.
