actually....
that's a TU-142 ASW variant of Bear. The MAD boom is on top of the vert stab....those assholes say they can do MAD runs at 20,000.

Does this mean that the Marines had an "up" radar or just that the E-2 vectored him to the intercept? Expiring minds want to know?

I'd be surprised if it worked at 20' with that massive airframe below the head. I've spent a LOT of time with P2, P3, and S3 MAD systems and this just doesn't look kosher to me.

Great picture, BTW

I saw the F-18 escort of a bear from the deck of an unnamed carrier. Unfortunately, the first pass or two the bear(s) made over the unnamed carrier and the rest of the battlegroup were completely unescorted.

I'm sure you know way more about the particulars of NA ASW systems than I.... I know a lot of Western scientists, like yourself, are skeptical of the Russkie's claim. My understanding is that the Russians put a lot more emphasis on their non-acoustic ASW sensors, vice lofar/difar buoys just because they never had any confidence in their ability to track Western boats acoustically....our boats were just too quiet.
