Scuttlebutt has it that the CRO selection is pretty daunting. The two CRO dudes I know are very high speed - one was a prior PJ who took a commission. When he was enlisted, he took care of some burn patient for 3 days on a ship (don't ask... we can't tell you) before they could get him to a "real" doctor. The other guy was a USAFA grad (got his free fall and glider quals while he was there) who went to medical school and became an F15 flight doc. Well, apparently that wasn't challenging enough. So he RESIGNED HIS MEDICAL CORPS COMMISSION and all the perks that go along with it (major bucks for incentive pay - both flight and doctor pay, women throwing their clothes at you when you walk around in your bag, the usual rock star accomodations)and is one of those kick @$$ CRO dudes.
As many of you know, the PJs aren't slouches either, and a lot of them are Air National Guard. Last year, I trained with them and some SEAL corpsmen (and some Special Forces Canadian bubbas - really odd experience, but that's another story), and it was crazy how much funding both types of units spent on travel.
Bottomline, there are lots of (great) options out there if you want to serve our country - it all depends on what you're qualified for and how you well market yourself.
Ruck on.
