Whoa, you did the right thing. This was Ready Room equivalent of an intervention. Who knows how many other forums he would have migrated to once the poker buddies had exhausted their questions but he still had to have the wannabe fix. If the thread over there is gone, then learning has transpired and he chose the respect of his peers over faceless poker dudes.
