On that note, I went through SERE with a bunch of 1st Recon guys. All of the ones that knew the guys portrayed in Generation Kill idolized them (most of the duys I did SERE with were awaiting thier first deployment with the unit).
Reminds me of your old signature about E-3s not stopping once they get the bit in their teeth for anything short of a direct order or physical restraint . . . "Where the F did my nav buddy go?" :icon_tong

/not meant to start a SERE school thread; there are precious few sea stories come out of there that aren't classified. Sorry, kiddies.

Watched the first episode and I enjoyed it.

One question though, why is there only Skoal and Copenhagen shown? Do Marines have no love for Grizzly, Kodiak, or Redman?:icon_wink

I got angry when I saw P-51 B models with D-Day invasion stripes during Memphis Belle...when that was May '43 :)

1. They were Ds in the movie, would have been Bs or Cs in real life.

2. Unless you saw a different movie than I did, they did not have invasion stripes.

Is that a Mustang from the movie? In the Spring of '43 weren't razorback P-47's and Lightnings the escorts at the time...because in the movie the P-51 escort heads home early ..when in reality they could have escorted the bombers all the way to Bremen and back, and I thought at the time, the RAF were the only ones using the Mustangs in the ETO until much later into 1943.

...Of course that movie was littered with inaccuracies...still great movie. /Thread jack

Yeah, like how the 25th mission was actually pretty benign w/ little to no action.

And no to mention, that in reality the Memphis Belle was not the first aircraft/crew to complete the 25 mission requirement.

Anyways, I remember enjoying 'Generation Kill' the book more than the show, but seeing as only episode has aired thus far I'll refrain from making a final judgment...for now. :)

well, HBO dumped $50 Million into making it... and BOB and ROME were both fantastic... all signs point to this being a great show (as well as something that will no doubt join my DVD collection)

Affirmative -- one of the Duxford-based P-51s that was used in the movie (G-BTCD). Photo was shot during the filming.

Here are a couple shots of Mustangs painted up during the filming of the flick:

Yep, you're totally right -- they SHOULD have been Jugs at the time the movie takes place. P-51B/Cs did get produced in '43, but would not have been in the ETO in the spring.

I'm sure that some of our female Marines chew that stuff.

Skoal is borderline, unless it's apple/peach/berry/whatever else that comes with a skirt. Just turn in your man card if you buy that crap.

I enjoyed it minus the blatant racism which I've only seen in humorous context not in the context depicted in the show. Also the use of "dog" would never be tolerated in the companies I've served in.
