Personal Statement
I would like to express to you my matchless enthusiasm to participate in the Seaman to Admiral (STA-21) program and earn a commission in the United States Navy. My experiences, motivation and values embrace the highest standards and traditions of the Navy and will easily contribute to and diversify the wardroom. I am currently applying for the Pilot (Primary) and CORE (Secondary) options.
The desire and passion to be in the military has reformed my attitude to become someone better than I ever was before. After my high school career, I went to pursue my passion for military aviation at Liberty University and participated in AFROTC at the University of Virginia. In college I vastly improved my academics and completed a total of 39 credit hours. Unfortunately, due to the high cost of education, I could no longer afford to attend college. Faced with a challenging situation, I knew that I wanted to become an officer and was willing to go the long route to accomplish my goal. After further research of military branches, I learned that the Navy was really the right place for me and enlisted on October 3rd, 2013.
My career with the Navy indicates that I have the attributes and aptitude to be a successful leader in any situation. During my first few weeks of Boot Camp, I was chosen to become the division’s Port Flag Carrier. While not typically a leadership position, it didn’t prevent me from displaying my abilities as a leader and a team player. My Recruit Division Commanders recognized me as a top performer in my division and meritoriously promoted me to Seaman. Following Boot Camp, I was appointed as class leader at my A-School, Entry-Level ELINT, giving me the incredible opportunity to lead future Cryptologic Technicians. Under my leadership, class 14050 graduated with a class GPA of 94.5% and no failures
At my first command, USS Farragut (DDG-99), I was able to learn from some of the best leaders the Navy has to offer. My chain of command gave me countless opportunities to learn, teach and lead Sailors, which prepared me for a successful 8 month deployment with the Theodore Roosevelt Carrier Strike Group. During my tour I received a nomination as Blue Jacket of the Quarter, was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal and earned my Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist insignia. I was promoted to Petty Officer Third Class off of my first advancement exam and established myself in the top 3 percentile of test takers during that exam cycle.
At the age of 14, I landed my first plane on Runway 23 at Morristown Municipal Airport, initiating my passion of becoming an aviator that quickly developed into something more meaningful. My interest in aviation has been noticed by my peers and earned me the nickname of “Mr. Pilot” onboard USS Farragut.
Upon selection to the STA-21 program, my goal is to pursue a degree in Computer Science at Rutgers State University in New Jersey. A degree in Computer Science will prepare me for the rigorous curriculum as a Student Naval Aviator and prepare me for the challenges of understanding advanced technology as the Navy evolves. Along with taking college courses, I plan on taking private flight lessons on my own time to help further my knowledge of aviation so that I can be a strong student and pilot for the Navy.
This is a life changing opportunity; when selected there is plenty of myself give back to the Navy, as it has invested so much in me. Being enlisted in the Navy has made me a more confident, disciplined and mature person than I was years ago. It made me ready to face new challenges and tackle more responsibilities. I am confident in my abilities to complete and exceed all requirements for the STA-21 program and pilot option.

I will post my stats here shortly, just wanted to introduce myself and offer any advice/assistance to those trying again for FY-17, as well as first time applicants. I'm STG1(SW) Carrillo, Enrique and I'm one of the lucky two who was selected for SWO this past cycle. It was my first time applying and I had a TON of help from my friend Merrillee Palmer who was selected as an alternate a few years back (yes, there is a chance for those who are "alternates" so make sure you do everything as if you were a primary.
To add: I personally believe that keeping the letters of recommendations to a bare minimum is essential- let your package do the talking for you! Think of it from a selection board's point of view. I submitted a single LOR from my old skipper onboard USS Kidd (DDG-100). If I had to guess what is most important, I'd say (in no particular order): evals (not just the promotion status-but write up as well), college credits, personal awards (i.e. SOQ/SOQ/honor grads/etc.), and that dreaded personal statement that we chop and edit more than every eval we've ever written. Sustained superior performance is critical (I say this because I had an NJP on my eval from 5 years ago that had to be included in the package..).
I wish everyone the best of luck this upcoming cycle and am more than happy to provide as much assistance as humanly (and inhumanly) possible if needed. Keep doing great things!

FY-16 CORE SELECT
You can apply for any designator you are eligible for. You do not HAVE to be a Nuke Officer. However, with the quotas being high for Nuke it would behoove you to apply Nuke.

I thought it used to be those in the nuke pipeline could only apply for nuke until they out in the fleet?

Per the STA-21 Fleet Brief, OPNAV 1420.1B, and the STA-21 website, a rated nuke would be eligible for most designators with the except of CEC (which requires 4 years of active duty not in a training status).

They guys I am talking about aren't yet rated nukes, often they have under a year TIS and are still in NNPS or at NPTU.
