FY 18 IWC DCO BOARD

First time IP applicant here, civ background, hoping for 1825. Tilting a bit at windmills I know, but hoping experience and skills may prove useful to the Navy. I worked in an IT org headed by a current IP O-6, so I might be able to finagle a recommendation or two.

Right now I'm shoring up some certifications...I have plenty in my specific field (MS database systems) but the security ones seem to be desired by the Navy so I should be getting at least Security+ in the next month. Not sure about CISSP, seems to be catered specifically to IT security full-timers, whereas my experience is more data and systems rather than cybersecurity (although my work, involving the protection and securing of data systems, is quite intrinsically bound up with security concerns). Also, doing a lot of running / developing shin splints. :)

I'm trying to not pester my OR too much about minor things....but figured I'd ask here...given where we are at this process, any major milestones I need to hit sooner, rather than later?

Throwing my hat in the ring. I am prior service (4 years), Operations Specialist. My bachelors is in History and currently working on a Masters in Corporate and Public Communications. (GPA: 3.875). Prior experience as a substitute teacher and Academic Advisor. I have been working in defense contracting for two years as a Configuration Management Analyst for the Navy. SECRET Clearance. I have strong leadership, references and prior evals. The only thing that may hold me back is I am still working on my Masters I have 4 courses ( one full semester) complete. Thoughts?

I'm wondering what my chances are too - former USAF Active duty Intell (10 yrs) and Foreign Area Officer w/French. Got out to get a PhD in Earth/Env Sci and trying to get back in. Was told EDO was a better route due to high number of applicants for intell. Thoughts?

Did you apply for EDO?

Do you have an engineering background?

I have a bachelors in physics, and yes, I did apply for EDO. Still waiting to hear from the January board, but since I don't have an engineering degree, I figured it was worth having a back-up plan if I don't get in.

Grabbed my Security+ certification last night. Scored higher than I thought...I spent most of the test arguing with what I perceived to be bad questions / false choices. But that's a certification exam for you, the MS database exams were even worse in that regard.

Planning to take a run at the (rather more challenging) CISSP, too. Hey, if I don't make the Navy, certainly won't hurt in my civ career.

First time poster. I found this forum a few months ago, but too late to help with my application with the 2017 board. I have one question that neither my OR nor the interviewers were able to answer. I'm a prior Naval Officer, but with a different designator (looking to apply for Intel or CW). I've been out several years now. They could not answer if I would come in at my prior rank or if I would start all over at O-1. Does anyone have a clue on how that works?

I believe you will retain your rank, but the issue is that if you are a LT then there needs to be a O3 billet available. I may be off but this is my best guess! you don't want to do your "old" job?!

Intell was fun but recruiter gouge was that waaaayyy too competitive and that I was a shoe-in for EDO (I did get selected for EDO in the end, so he was right about that part)
