Maybe it was. The guy did no real service except be a student so he didn't contribute anything. When offered the opportunity to contribute, he made it clear he didn't want too. I don't have a problem with any of this.

But... "with 90% GI Bill". It's federal law so I can't fault him for accepting it but to post about it? Not good.

The assumption here is that I'm not serving anymore, and that is false.

BTW HAL I remember you, you gave me some good advice when I was entering the pipeline years ago.

Anyways I don't really care what anyone thinks about my path, lets move on.

I tried to edit the above post but I couldnt, so I'll just reply to myself. Sorry, I haven't been on AirWarriors since I left the pipeline years ago.

Let me give you a better picture of what DQing will look like.

You'll probably get stashed at a training command (I was at the HITU at NAS Whiting), and you will await a POCR board (which is sort of a redesignation board).

You will know ahead of time which communities are recruiting (EOD was recruiting when I DQed, as was SWO and IW). This all varies wildly per year group and there is no way to know what will be available.

I had a Computer Engineering degree and IW was interested in me, but I wanted to leave the Navy. I called up the IW Community manager and just told them, "I am not interested in IW." and they respected that.

I was OCS, and maybe that has a lot to do with it, but when forced to choose communities for my POCR Board, I proactively reached out to those communities and told them I was just wanting to get out, and to please not select me for redesignation. I knew some Naval Academy and ROTC dudes that were in similar situations (Some just failed flight school), and they also ended up getting out pretty easily. This was back in 2017.

The end result was that I ended up getting out of the Navy as an O-2 with 90% GI Bill.

Not great, not terrible.

I wouldn't worry about it. It probably won't happen to you.

I had ones that I put in and go through my NRD on their way to IRR who were flight school drops, many wanted to stay but were told they could not. A few that were stashed at my NRD were from NROTC/USNA and when asked if they wanted to redesignate said "no" and they were just processed into the IRR with no grief.

I did feel for one guy who wanted to stay, went through POCR, redesignated into an IWC designator then was immediately put IRR as well.

Yeah its not a great place to be. Pretty much everyone I met in that situation (besides a guy who got a DUI) was given a good re-enlistment code, so it's just a bump in the road.

You’re right. I made an assumption about you not serving. I was obviously wrong and I apologize.

But it’s cool to rub in the fact he’s collecting benefits despite doing anything in the Navy?
What’s your criteria for a veteran’s ability to take advantage of the GI Bill? Some people in the military spend their whole career stateside. So in your opinion they should be ineligible to receive any benefits?

No one should have to justify their service (or lack thereof in your eyes) to anyone.

unfortunately I have seen this more than I care to, some due to no fault of the service member and some due to them creating the situation.

  • kid injured in car accident in nuke pipeline training, med hold then discharged.
  • kid finishes nuke pipeline then gets "sad" on leave before getting to ship.
  • multiple unmarried woman getting pregnant during pipeline, after completing pipeline, or right after arriving on the ship having kid, then getting discharged.

due to length of nuke pipeline pretty much all were discharged after 2 years.

He earned his benefits. Just like everyone else, be they a 4 star or a PSSN who bails at the earliest possible opportunity. Your potshots are pretty unbecoming.

Thanks. It's exhausting explaining my (service related) med DQ to people every time my navy service comes up.

I would not recommend it.

I appreciate you all.

I'm out!

They do need to do a minimum amount of service, 2 years I believe. That is why many nukes who find a way to get out of the USN do so before reaching a ship since the pipeline is around 2 years.
