What's this "autopilot" you speak of?

Wait wait, slow down. You mean the Phrog isn't the pinnacle of avionics technology??

Stop the fucking presses!

(Smilies in effect. I rather enjoyed my brief stick time in the mighty battle-phrog ;))

Got some bad news for you. When you hit the fleet, you'll be a 2P. That's the autopilot in the helo world... ;)

I think I said this before ... so please 'scuse an ol' man if that is the case:

Almost 25K hours of flight time --- ZERO electronic interference from any source --- not counting Rooskie radars, solar flares, or the Northern Lights ... :)

My cell phone turns on randomly in the T-45. That's about the only weird thing I've ever have had happen. Don't know why it does it either...

Never have problems with my phone doing weird stuff in the 45, but it stays in its case, in a chest pocket under my torso harness and vest.

Last drill weekend when we flew to Charleston, we had ZERO satellites for the first hour and 15 minutes. I was DR'ing off the sectional - then I remembered that my smartphone has a GPS. I used GPS + Google Maps (Data Connection) to idiot check myself. No issues.

I don't think electronics will have much affect on an aircraft that relies on pedal power to fly, no matter how powerful. ;)

I'm curious to see how much, if at all, cell phones and computers (wireless components) REALLY affect avionics. I remember that Mythbusters episode and it seemed like there was absolutely NOTHING readable in terms of interference, but perhaps their test setup was just not close enough to real conditions.

Just to input more information from the show, they did the test with a normal cell signal against unshielded wires and got nothing. Then they jacked up the cell signal to something like 100 or a 1000 times more powerful then anything on the market and were able to get variations in the navigation equipment. The key point here is unshielded. Initially they were very impressed that it could happen, then talked to airplane manufactures and found that all planes, from fighters, to airlines, to your cessna 172 have extensive shielding for all avionics and wires.

Magnetic fields decay exponentially, so unless you barge into the cockpit, and make a call three inches from the nav equipment, you'll be fine.

No to mention not having a cell phone when flying is bad, I have had people call me from a T-34 to coordinate range space, a fly-by arranged via text messaging, and seen my wingman make a call at 30K feet over LA.

I think it's more of a courtesy thing. How many of you on commercial flights want to have someone blabbing on a cell phone all the way from Seattle to London, or even a short regional hop?

If that is the case then shouldn't it be a individual airline policy not federal law?
