Earning an MBA while in flight program

I was wondering if (while flying for the Navy)taking class and earning an MBA was a realistic goal. I know that an extremely busy training program and sea tours wouldn't allow the time, but what about shore tours? Would I be able to use that time to study for an MBA? If so, would I be able to chose the school I attend?

I know of a few people who are on shore tours and are teaching/assisting with University ROTC programs, and earning their degree simultaneously. Is this normal? At what point in an aviator's career would any of this apply?

Thanks for the help! -JT

JT- As for getting you MBA while in the training command forget about it. Flight training is the most important thing. You won't have time for much else. Once you get to your first tour squadron there is some time. Out on the boat there is much more time and they offer classes, but it is up to you as to how much time you want to invest. You best bet is to get your MBA while on a shore tour. Out at NAS Lemoore they are offering a MBA program through the Naval Postgraduate School for instructor mainly I think. I will bet they will offer similar programs at other places soon.

My experience with aviators is that not many of then get an MBA while they are in their first or second tours. They wait until later when they are established in their community. They spend the first two tours working on their flying only. Unless you go to an ROTC unit near a base there will not be much flying to do and that is bad. You want to go to an FRS or a weapons/tactic school for your platform as a shore tour after your initial sea tour. You get the most flying and you meet the prospective XOs. They are the ones who recommend or pick who they want in their squadron., especially when you leave your shore and head back to a squadron. So face time and good performance is important.

Hope that helps

Great help. I was assuming that a shore tour would offer the only opportunity...and totally agree that flight time is most important during the first couple tours. Thanks for the information! -JT
