Some interesting aiports to get into here in the states are Eagle, Aspen, and Rifle in Colorado. I saw some movie clips on the internet of night approaches, its pretty crazy. I'll try to find them and post them in here.

Uh, I was going ask if there's a runway more dangerous than a moving one in the middle of the ocean with a touchdown zone less than 200 feet long....

You forgot to mention the moronic bridge team that chases the winds and swings Final Bearing 15 degrees when you are on a 1 mile final.

We waved a guy off one night because the ship was chasing winds and killing this poor kid's approach. "Waveoff. Ship's in a turn."

5 seconds later, the Captain of the ship called down, "I DON'T EVER WANT TO HEAR YOU SAY 'SHIP'S IN A TURN' OVER THE RADIO AGAIN PADDLES!" He was pissed, prolly because if there were a mishap and somewhere on the tape was the LSOs pueling about the ship turning, he'd take part of the blame.

So 10 minutes later the same thing happened, but with a different pilot. My buddy was the Controlling LSO and I was backing up. Kid was having a really tough time, so my buddy waved him off. "Waveoff.......uh, the wake's in a turn." I laughed so hard my side hurt the next day.

We never heard a peep from the bridge.

Wow, I'm sure the poor pilot was delayed in selecting the waveoff trying to figure that one out. Picture deer in the headlights wearing an O2 mask.

Nothing like "Come left" the entire way down the chute because the ship's in a turn and they need you to get aboard that pass... fun times!

Old joke, but still a good one -- I heard the same story when I first started waving. If not a "joke", then your guy borrowed from good LSO sea story "stock"... :D

... But the C.O. sez:
"I DON'T EVER WANT TO HEAR YOU SAY 'SHIP'S IN A TURN' OVER THE RADIO AGAIN PADDLES!" (??!!):eek:

Unbelievable. That C.O. is a goddamn fool. Because HIS ship was turning during the recovery and mebbe making HIM look "bad", he's just put the seed of intimidation on the Platform for as long as he's on the ship -- and it just might end up costing "him" and the AirWing dearly some day -- when the call that should'a been made doesn't get made by some more inexperienced LSO ... 'cause you don't want to piss off the ship's C.O, right??? Right.

Our C.O.'s would NEVER have done that -- their egos never got in the way of a safe recovery and they always backed the LSO's 100%.

And we had some great ones. The types that would come up to us @ the CUBI BOQ bar, buy us a round of drinks, and say something like this before departing: ..." Thanks for keeping all of us out of trouble, boys". :)
