A pictures is worth a thousand words. Five pictures are worth five thousand words...
Taken from the door facing towards the room. The room isn't well lit in this picture but you can see the bed and recliner.
Taken from the window. All of the furniture pictured came with the room including the lamp. Stuff on the desk and shelves is mine, of course.
Taken from above the bed. Can get a good idea of the size of the room in this picture. That's the front door in the back in the kitchen area. My TV is on the dresser that came with the room.
Taken from in front of the desk. Bed, dresser, recliner, mirror, lamp came with the room. The smaller pieces of furniture (coffee table and end table) are mine, though. Those are the only pieces of furniture I decided to use of my own. The rest are in storage somewhere.
A better look at the kitchen. Fridge, sink with garbage disposal,
Not pictured is the closet and bathroom. You walk through the closet to get to the bathroom. Closet isn't huge, but its not tiny either. You also get a "cage" as mentioned above to put crap in. Its probably 4 feet high and 6 feet deep? I don't know, just guessing. Laundry facilities are in each buildling and are close (and obviously free).
I just got here last week (for "Advanced" .. I'm a USAF stud that went to Whiting and am done with the Navy now). If you're single, you're required to live on base (unless you can get a hardship letter) if the occupancy is less than 90%. It doesn't take much to go below 90%, and they count rooms that nobody is living in but are being remodeled or cleaned as unoccupied (i.e. they can be below 90% but not have a room to give you = you are stuck in billeting for a short time). Their occupancy rates change a lot around here so one week it will be full and the next they'll have a ton of room so its all on your timing. You can have some or all of the furniture removed from the room if you wish. Most people use their own bed. I have a queen-sized bed myself, and decided I didn't much need it and it wasn't worth the space, but there is plenty of room in here for it. There is a weekly maid service ($40/mo) which I think will come in handy for things like the bathroom, etc. Because I'm using the gov't bed with the gov't bedding, the maid will clean my sheets as well. Might as well take advantage of it and save myself the time of scrubbing stuff. Keeping something tidy is one thing, but clean can be time consuming! Anyway, best of luck to any/all that are coming to Vance. I'm sure it isn't as bad as the horror stories say it is, but I can't say for sure because I went to NAS Whiting Field Country Club. If you have any other question feel free to ask.
Anyway, here is why I chose to live on base (they were above 90% when I showed up):
Of couse, "work" for me is the 32nd FTS whereas if you're coming here for Primary you'll be 8th FTS.. but that's just accross the street so you'll have to walk another.. oh.. 30 seconds. It sure beats that hellish drive to Whiting I had every freaking day!
And to answer your unasked question, yes...I haven't started yet and I really do have this much time on my hands. Well.. back to the books...
