Current Vance Housing

Purdue

Chicks Dig Rotors...

Anyone who's a recent report to Vance:

I'm wondering what the housing status is... AFB housing office up there wont talk to me or my chain down here... I'm wondering how to pack my gear.

I've been told the BOQ has both furnished and unfurnished rooms? So I may want to put my bed/dresser/table/chair in my partial delivery? But I dont want all that junk delivered if I get put in a furnished room...

Also, I'm reporting to Vance on the 18th, but I'm curious how full the Q is now, and if there's even a chance of getting off-base housing.

Just looking for a heads-up, because the movers come in a week and I kinda need to know wat to store and what to bring.

The BOQ rooms come furnished, they will remove any piece of furniture you want. In other words, you cant get stucked with a furnished room. I personally kept a dresser and a lamp, and used my own bed and chairs. I wouldnt be concerned with that.

What may be a concern is the waitlist, you may be in transient housing for a while with your stuff in storage. I dont think anyone will have current gouge on that short of going into the Cherokee Lodge office and asking.

If you want to live off base, you will defenitly be able to. The Q will always be near full or full. Its not like a Navy base, all that is their is UPT.

I reccomend living in the Q, its about 50 yards from your squadron... that is kinda nice for the 5am formal briefs.

Awesome. thanks for the quick reply. How big are the Q rooms? I have a Queen-Bed... may be too big if it's basically a one-room hotel living.

I've heard the AF Q rooms are nice. Since you appear to be there... I'd like to know what you recommend I bring, or what I should leave in storage

Thanks NavyVance. Also, how long from your report date was it before you classed up? Before you were out of transient quarters?

Im not their anymore, but I was there less then a year ago, so, things should not have changed too much.

I had a queen size bed in my room, it was fine. Other then that, I would be fairly minimal, the rooms are not huge. Ive seen people fit couches, but its tight, and you can bring your own desk if you want. The closet is pretty huge, so, bring all the cloths you want.

Its basically a giant room, with a kitchen seperated by a counter. I found that using the chairs they provided to eat at the counter was good for a table, and also good for my laptop and studying.

Basically, dont bring anything you wouldnt have in your bedroom. They also have a storage locker for every room that you can use for whatever randome garage type things you have.

I dunno the current gouge on the wait. I would expect a 3 to 6 week wait to class up. That seems to have been pretty consistent (but could be shorter).

As for the Transient, I was there for a week, would have been there for two had I not taken leave. If you have leave, I would defenitly reccomend taking it before you class up, but after you check in.

If you have any more questions, just pm me.

A pictures is worth a thousand words. Five pictures are worth five thousand words...

Taken from the door facing towards the room. The room isn't well lit in this picture but you can see the bed and recliner.

fromwindow6bo.jpg

Taken from the window. All of the furniture pictured came with the room including the lamp. Stuff on the desk and shelves is mine, of course.

frombed6jo.jpg

Taken from above the bed. Can get a good idea of the size of the room in this picture. That's the front door in the back in the kitchen area. My TV is on the dresser that came with the room.

fromdesk1sw.jpg

Taken from in front of the desk. Bed, dresser, recliner, mirror, lamp came with the room. The smaller pieces of furniture (coffee table and end table) are mine, though. Those are the only pieces of furniture I decided to use of my own. The rest are in storage somewhere.

A better look at the kitchen. Fridge, sink with garbage disposal,

Not pictured is the closet and bathroom. You walk through the closet to get to the bathroom. Closet isn't huge, but its not tiny either. You also get a "cage" as mentioned above to put crap in. Its probably 4 feet high and 6 feet deep? I don't know, just guessing. Laundry facilities are in each buildling and are close (and obviously free).

I just got here last week (for "Advanced" .. I'm a USAF stud that went to Whiting and am done with the Navy now). If you're single, you're required to live on base (unless you can get a hardship letter) if the occupancy is less than 90%. It doesn't take much to go below 90%, and they count rooms that nobody is living in but are being remodeled or cleaned as unoccupied (i.e. they can be below 90% but not have a room to give you = you are stuck in billeting for a short time). Their occupancy rates change a lot around here so one week it will be full and the next they'll have a ton of room so its all on your timing. You can have some or all of the furniture removed from the room if you wish. Most people use their own bed. I have a queen-sized bed myself, and decided I didn't much need it and it wasn't worth the space, but there is plenty of room in here for it. There is a weekly maid service ($40/mo) which I think will come in handy for things like the bathroom, etc. Because I'm using the gov't bed with the gov't bedding, the maid will clean my sheets as well. Might as well take advantage of it and save myself the time of scrubbing stuff. Keeping something tidy is one thing, but clean can be time consuming! Anyway, best of luck to any/all that are coming to Vance. I'm sure it isn't as bad as the horror stories say it is, but I can't say for sure because I went to NAS Whiting Field Country Club. If you have any other question feel free to ask.

Anyway, here is why I chose to live on base (they were above 90% when I showed up):

Of couse, "work" for me is the 32nd FTS whereas if you're coming here for Primary you'll be 8th FTS.. but that's just accross the street so you'll have to walk another.. oh.. 30 seconds. It sure beats that hellish drive to Whiting I had every freaking day!

And to answer your unasked question, yes...I haven't started yet and I really do have this much time on my hands. Well.. back to the books...

New policy, apparently. Or old policy newly enforced. Who knows. I wasn't forced, though. Was a choice.

I think the fact that they were remodeling when I was there may have kept the Q from opening up much.

Dennis, many many thanks to you, the pictures do a LOT for me. My last few questions to you, I promise:

I've been in non-transient Q's before... some had weekly inspections, and some did not. Does the AF do any kind of random/routine/spot inspections on officer student's rooms? I'm just kinda curious as to how clean I'll need to keep it.

Also, I have a small 2 ft snake which lives in a 29 gallon terrarrium. Do they allow pets, or am I sending him off to a friends house for 5 months? And if they don't allow them... how likely are they to do room inspections and find him?

They have random inspections, noone ever inspected me /that I know of/. The snake isnt gonna hack it.

Quarterly room inspections according to the paperwork they gave me.. no idea when/how/who its done.

Only pets that are allowed according to the paperwork they gave me are fish.

Hey Purdue:

If you are Navy you do not have to live in the BOQ no matter what the ladies at the Cherokee lodging office say. All Air Force UPT have to live on base unless the dorms are full. If the ladies give you a hard time when you show up, go to the Casual Office (71st OSS) and talk to one of the Captains there. They will tell you that the Navy pays your BAH (not the Air Force) so they could care less if Navy guys take up space in their dorms. By now the ladies at the lodging office are use to dealing with Navy guys moving off (despite dorms not being full)

Most people live in Sunridge 2 min away from the base. Its well worth living off base and most of your Navy (and some AF) classmates will be right there with you.

Hey Easycat, if I stay in the BOQ they charge me full BAH allowance for that, correct?

So, If I am gonna be collecting like $700 for BAH + BAS and Sunridge says they have a unit open to me for $500 a month.... I make moola?

Cause, BOQ means I collect no extra moola from BAH correct?

That is correct, that's how the system works.
