Hard to tell, but it looks like it might have been a JSOW or JASM. There was a more detailed clip circulating a while back with some more detailed shots and more camera angles, but I can't recall what it was they were dropping.

I saw it a diff angle, don't know if same video but it was an A-4 and F/A-18 as well, it looked like the pylon+fuel tank actually came off...

It had to be some kind of a test -- look at the way the F-18 is painted -- China Lake/Pt. Mugu type of paint scheme. The TA-4 is probably some kind of chase/photo plane -- and there's at least two of them from the camera angles.

Whatever came off may/may not have been part of a "separation" test or it could just have been a malfunction or "crewscrew"-up; in any case the A-4 driver(s) are lucky they got out (?). At first I thought "what in the heck are they sticking around so long for ... ??" After watching the video clip a couple of times I noticed how violent the A-4 nose was pitching and yawing -- reaching either the primary or alternate ejection handle would have been a major effort. Good for them .....

Might just have been the angle, but did anyone else notice when the -18 was pulling away in the second angle, tell me it didn't look like it was missing a vertical stab?

You are right it does look like it is missing one. Its just video quality though, you can kinda barely see its there.

I hope he had is gloves on, fingers in-tact, sleeves rolled down, collar rolled up, and O2 mask on and firmly attached.

You know, they cover things like uncommanded propeller feather in NATOPS, but nowhere do they say what the EP is if your whole damn wing gets ripped off and your plane bursts into flames. I guess it's got to be a judgement call, huh?

Sure they do ... In Flight Damage, Out of Control recovery, and (for the T-34) Bailout.

For the T-44 there's the aft non-flushing chemical toilet with privacy curtain ... might as well 'cause you gonna die.

I'd be willing to bet that MOST PCLs (jets anyway) have some flavor of FIRE EP whose last step is EJECT.

VarmintShooter: great avatar ... original.

Brett: EJECT is in there 4-5 times per procedure. Wish I still had one ... :)

Sorry...I'm just a lowly Primary SNFO who knows jack-squat. Maybe I missed that EP somewhere.

I'll go sit in the corner and just leave my credit card on the bar...how's that?

Another video, Horrible stuff, doesnt look like the chute opened in time and I am not sure if both NFO and Pilot even got out. Anyone know the story? http://www.alexisparkinn.com/photogallery/Videos/Airplane -F-4 Crash.mpg

Yeah, I did a Google on that crash after I saw the video a few years ago. As stated, it was at the Pt. Magu airshow back in '02 I believe. A Navy pilot at the controls and a Marine wso in the back. Pilot went in with the jet and the wso barely makes it out, only to land in the fire and wreckage. So yes, both perished.

I actually have a photo of the exact jet and crew practicing the evening before. Quite fitting that it is such an awesome photo.
