COVID-19

I thought that was a pretty good article. Articulated a lot of the things I have been thinking over the last year, and why I haven't really spent much time on COVID "news".
Unfortunately that’s how most people still digest their information, and how they make their decisions and decide whom or what to believe. And fear porn gets ratings, and the OODA loop keeps going.

As far as alternative means of information gathering, there are still people on this site that refuse to believe something posted on Twitter or other smaller, independent or politically biased (to one side) to be pertinent and/or relevant, and not believable, because it wasn’t published through a newspaper of record that meets their threshold of credibility or whatever.

I think when the dust has settled and if anyone does a serious lessons learned, it will boil down to the fact that we threw out the playbook in a panic, and once the potential outcome of said panic became apparent, leadership doubled down on policies that didn’t work in the first place. And the panic and fear stoked by the media let everyone get away with it. Oh, and 2020 also happened to be an election year. It was really a Swiss cheese model the more I think about it; a near perfect confluence of events.

Not everything on Twitter or smaller news outlets is trash, just a pretty high number of links to those sources posted here.

What’s that oft-used saying? One man’s trash is another man’s treasure...?

But you just proved my point exactly. Just because it doesn’t meet your personal standard doesn’t make it any less real.

Should be interesting to see how long until Fauci backs away from needing 85% vaccinated. Not that it was ever an achievable goal anyway since there’s no vaccine for children. Then again maybe that was the point.
He’s already talked about elementary school aged kids getting vaccinated in early 2022. Pure insanity.

What's the insane part?
Notwithstanding vaccinating them against something that isn’t a risk to their demographic, the fact that teachers’ unions in some states will use this to try and keep schools closed for another year.

It’s their equivalent of “just wait two weeks!”.

I don’t think vaccinating kids is crazy, at least once vaccines are approved for their use. It’s just not terribly important considering the overwhelming evidence that they aren’t at risk and aren’t a significant factor in spreading it. Unfortunately our response largely ignored that and in much of the country we are still needlessly sacrificing kids in the name of sAfeTy

In order for the vaccines to be approved for use on children, they need to be tested on children. I’d be interested in how many parents would allow their child to be a test subject since I assume that they’d need parental consent to be a part of the study? That this is even being discussed or considered is yet another major goalpost shift.

And yes, kids belong in school. Period. I’m not sure how some schools can still be closed for in-person instruction when other states have successfully opened. I don’t understand how parents stand for it at this point. This is a truly heartbreaking story to read. And it’s happening all across America.

Plenty of parents will give consent to participate in the vaccine trials, we are a pretty big country after all, and they have already begun trials for some vaccines on kids already.

As for a "major goalpost shift" I don't see how this changes what have been the priorities vaccine-wise since the beginning. The rapid testing and deployment focused on adults to shorten the time for vaccine approval and deployment, leaving the trials for kids later.

Kids and schools haven’t been a major vector for transmission. There’s been multiple papers written about this. Children don’t need a vaccine. They need adults to act like adults, stop being scared, and send them back to school.

Also, the CDC just changed their guidelines from six feet social distancing to three? What, pray tell, changed? Did the science all of a sudden change? Are we sure we don’t need to just wait two weeks? Why three feet at school and six feet for the rest of America?

And if you don’t think that starting at “two weeks to flatten the curve” and ending at “zero covid and keep kids out of school until they’re vaccinated” qualifies as a major goalpost shift, I think we’ll just have to agree to disagree.

Your kids may not but many parents will likely feel the need to vaccinate their kids, just like they do with the flu shot every year. So that ain't really your call. And schools don't just have kids in them, much as some would prefer it that way.

A new virus that is barely a year old and constantly evolving, pretty much explains why things to include recommendations for dealing with it are often changing.

Dr. Fauci didn't say to keep kids out of school until they are vaccinated, nor has anyone else in the federal government health leadership that I am aware of. So what's the insanity?

Schools weren’t a vector for transmission before the vaccine came out. And if teachers want to get vaccinated they can. Do you recall the statement made by Dr. Walensky that teachers didn’t need the vaccine to open schools safely? And then the White House said she was speaking in her “personal capacity”? I’ll drop a link in case you need a reminder. Turns out the teachers unions didn’t like that very much so the science changed in order to cater to them. If you don’t think that’s going to happen with kids and vaccines, I’ve got a bridge in Brooklyn to sell you.

Also, I’ve included a link from UNESCO about the consequences of school closures. I’d hate to think parents are still keeping their otherwise healthy kids out of school to wait on a vaccine that the director of the CDC said wasn’t necessary.

In response to your talk about how the science has changed due to the novel nature of this virus, what science changed that cases are down so much in Texas over two weeks after the lifting of the mask mandate? I was told that this was a ticking time bomb that would result in mass death and destruction, yet cases are down substantially. Is it safe to change the science on that one yet?

How does anything above have to do with the 'insanity' of vaccinating kids?

I answered it several posts ago. Are you now going to answer my questions?

It’s their equivalent of “just wait two weeks!”.

P.S. if you think that this road doesn’t end at “every schoolchild in America must be vaccinated for schools to be safe!”, think again.
