Side note: Does the Navy believe in the One Bar Club?

"One-Bar"??? Do you mean "All-Hands'" Clubs ??? Ensigns have "One Bar" ... :) ... and I don't think that's what you are talking about.

I don't know or care what the kinder, gentler, PC Navy believes in --- I don't support the concept nor the reality of the All-Hands' Clubs. There was (still is) a reason for separate clubs where one could socialize with your peer group. The "All-Hands'" Club destroys that opportunity and were born in the post-Tailhook '91 officer bashing days of the Clinton DOD. My experience was that most O's and E's would agree to separate clubs ..... today's attitudes are so twisted that all bets are off, however.

There are All Hands events where you can socialize and "bond" with the men --- up and down the chain --- and an "All-Hands Club" where one can go to relax and let your hair down does not fit the bill ...... I'm not trying to be an elitist so don't even get started on that road -- most E's I know would prefer to have their own club as well. If the "men" want to rub elbows with the O's, there are venues more appropriate than the PC "All-Hands" feel-good approach. When I want to let my "guard" down and relax --- I don't want to do it with my subordinates. Period.

Whidbey still has an O'Club, Pearl Harbor does not -- it used to be good. Ft. DeRussy (a.k.a. Hale Koa) now has no O'Club and it's a shame. Did anyone here ever patronize the "Banyan Tree Bar" @ the old DeRussy BOQ ??? Kaneohe does have an O' Club --- and most I know appreciate the fact. Guam (Navy) does not. Hickam still has an O'Club, but it is a pale shadow of what it was during the glory days of the '60's and 70's .......

Glad to see it worked out for you with your Dad, Fezz. Lesson learned: Don't believe everything you hear --- check it out for yourself ...... if you want it done right.

Yes, the Ensign/Lt(jg)/WO one...

Sorry, no help here .... never heard of a "one bar club". I entered the Navy 40 years ago and I don't have a clue as to what you are talking about ..... but that's what my ex-wife said, also.

Disclaimer: really really stupid midshipman question following-

Do midshipmen salute warrant officers? I've heard both yes and no, the argument for is that they have commissions, therefore outrank us, but I've also heard that as officer candidates we outrank them.

Well, heres my experience.....

CORTRAMID West '02, my dad (CWO4) was the FSO at the galley. All the mids were waiting in front of the entrance to get lunch. My dad walks outside to his car to attend a meeting. EVERYONE popped to the POA and saluted my pops. Pretty crazy moment considering I have never seen my dad saluted by so many people, midshipmen no less. From my education and training, I have saluted warrants on cruise and I have called them "sir." If I was in the wrong, then I received some crappy advice from my unit staff. :(

You salute all officers.

When I was at AOCS, I was an AOC(N)2 or Aviation Officer Candidate (NFO) 2nd Class. It was a paygrade of E-5. But don't let this fool you - you are not a second class petty officer. It's more of an adminstrative rank than a real rank.

Officer Candidates DO NOT outrank any officer, including W-1s who are not commissioned. If fact, they do not outrank enlisted Sailors either unless given positional authority over them.

HAL Pilot makes a good point... imagine "out-ranking" your DI while you're in OCS. "Um, no Gunny I don't feel like doing side shuttle hops."

A4s- Get this. I wasn't even able to get a beer at the club at Pearl because I was wearing my "working" uniform in the evening. I even tried to use the slick "but ma'am, a flightsuit is not a working uniform, it's an organizational clothing" to no avail. To think, a club on a naval base not serving a naval officer wearing a naval uniform. Say it ain't so!

Depends on where you go. True O Clubs are kind of a dying breed, especially within CONUS. I can't speak for the Marine side of the house, but I'm pretty sure Whidbey and Fallon are the only O Clubs on the west coast. What's the situation elsewhere?

Brett
Evidently Point Mugu still had one right on the water up until the late '90s when one of the annual Malibu storms came and ripped it away - literally. Club could be logged as "lost at sea." All there is now is a dinky BOQ bar that's open only by request of the squadrons about once a week.

Amen to that. North Island had a pretty good setup back in the late 80's/early 90's. The E Club wasn't bad, had good drink prices, finger foods, etc. in the afternoons...a good place you could unwind (esp. if you lived on base). The Officer's Club was on the hill, overlooked the water, had an O'Club pool (aka the Top Gun pool) as well as had the I-Bar across the street from the VS RAG and VRC-30. That I'm aware of, only the I-Bar remains as a "club." The "All-Hands" Club that was the old O'Club ended up suffering as a result. Sure, they opened it to everyone for lunch, etc., but it was never really a club again. Seems as though they drew down on the old E-Club ("The Landing") as well. There were a fair number of unhappy people on both sides.
