Care Packages to OCS

Hey all,

My OR told me that I should think about getting care packages together to send myself at OCS, things like extra socks or underwear. The idea of care packages in OCS seems weird to me, though. With a process so regimented, I find it hard to believe that they will let me get little boxes of goodies while I'm supposed to be completely devoid of individuality. While I know I can get by without an tube of Gold Bond Foot Powder mid-way through, it would certainly be nice.

Does anyone have any insight into Care Packages in OCS?

Best,

RS

Don't get packages sent to you at OCS. Reinforce this with all your family members who might think its a good idea to surprise you with candy, cookies, porn, etc. Anything you think you need like socks, underwear, gold bond, etc, you can buy at the small NEX near Nimitz hall or the big NEX (like a Wal-Mart) once you're given privileges to do so.

Each class team has different ways of dealing with packages, but early on it wasn't uncommon to open it in front of your class or with your DI in private. Do everything in your power to remain unnoticed.

^^^ All of he above.
Look, this isn't "Band Camp". Everything you TRULY NEED is going to be given/issued to you...probably in numbers that actually exceed the requirement. What you might appreciate MOST from home are letters of encouragement reminding you that "This too will end...keep charging!"
Anything else? Yeah, the Navy Exchange is there for you and you can't beat the prices. Good luck.

The NEX also sells clear shoe polish. Used in moderation, CSP really does keep rust from prematurely appearing on your drill rifle. Close to graduation time Gunny Crenshaw asked what we did to reduce rust as it was obvious we spent little time cleaning our rifles. He just shook his head and walked away mumbling something.

As others have said- everything you need is at the NEX. Inbound mail to you is just an unnecessary risk other than letters.

Have someone send you a disposable camera. My Dad sent me one and it was painfull. However at the end of OCS I got the camera back. I ended up with some great pics of the punishment.

I had insoles sent to me as soon as they were authorized at the end of week one or so (I specifically requested them from my mom and told her send nothing else). Opened it in front of the DI and was no big deal (this is before we ever got any NEX runs).

Now for the guy that got a bag of swedish fish...he had to do one pushup for every calorie in the (huge) bag. I do not remember the exact number, but it was a ton. He was reporting to the DI's office with the section leader, pres, etc every morning for weeks to work them off (think it just ended when we made candi-o phase as our DI was probably not really bothering to keep a count).

Also, FYI they locked every single computer in Nimitz like 2 days before we graduated. Eliminates a distraction, but definitely sucks for people still going through.

You mean nobody can use Google Docs as the sneaky "social networking" site anymore??

What? I said nothing.

Yeah, I imagine there are numerous methods of keeping your rifle "cosmetically clean"...especially as you know you will never have to use it in battle. But here's the deal..."clear shoe polish" is just, well...car wax...in fact, probably not as good. Get a big can...donate it to the squad bay "Cleaning Gear Locker"...it'll be your legacy to a year of classes behind you.
Sorry, "Chesty"...I know you're rolling over in your grave! It is what it is... ;)

Some of us knew about it, but I was not referring to google docs. I watched hulu all the time as an OC and went to sports sites, ebay, craigslist, etc (probably not the best use of time, but it kept me sane and I never failed anything). Even espn360 worked. No more of that. The trick now as a candi-o is to have a smart phone with tethering and bring a laptop. I think I was the only one in my class with a setup like that. Got to use it a lot after indoc week was over (was on indoc staff) and was able to download tv shows, skype, or anything else I felt like doing and connected it to the bigger monitor in the room with the vga cable. I knew all the tricks and then some.

Now and then we got lucky and had a computer that was unlocked and could go to some of those sites. People started scouting out rooms ahead of time when a new class was about to go through Outpost. I got lucky after RLP and had a good computer by pure chance. Other people weren't so fortunate and had computers that even blocked BUPERS and Navy.mil. Most ridiculous internet filter ever.

My dad got me an iPad with 3G coverage as an early commissioning gift and sent it to me right when I started candio. Lovely toy.

You rock stars realize class teams read this site, right? It won't hurt you, but don't screw things up for those behind you.
